DA alternator problems??
I think my alternator just crapped out on me. I was driving, and I have a phantom voltmeter on the a-pillar. I was driving normally, and it went from the normal just under 14 volts down to 8 volts. The radio went, along with the clock. The dash lit up dimly, and the headlights went really dim. (Of course it happened at night) If I kept it over 3000 RPM, it would barely go over 13, but under that and it went down to 8 volts. I checked the belt, it was fine. The battery light isn't on. The battery cables are all good. No check engine lights or anything. It sounds to me like the voltage regulator, but I have no idea. Anyone have any ideas. Oh yeah, it's a b16 in a DA. The alternator came with the swap, and it prolly has about 140,000 miles on it. That's just my guess since the clutch looked like it had around 90000 miles on it when I swapped it in. So any help would be greatly appreciated. I've searched already, and found a lot of problems of the same type, but they all had battery lights to go with it, so I don't know.
doesnt sound like an alternator problem to me (but dont rule it out). when mine crapped out on my my engine light would flick on and off for short periods, then when it died everything slowly dimmed and crapped out. radio, lights, dash, everything. ALSO CHECK YOUR FUSES! in my engine bay after i installed the new alternator nothing would start up. i found a blown fuse..which happened to be the fuse that gives my entire car power from the battery. between my radio and my alarm system my car'd sucked so much juice after the alternator crapped out that it not only drained the battery but also blew that fuse. almost missed it because my friend overlooked it as a relay when in fact it WAS a fuse. i dunno about b16's but my b18's was located on the passenger's side of the bay in the corner against the wall.
its probably the voltage regulator, and im not sure if you can get those seperately from the dealer, maybe an auto parts store, but i would just suck it up and get a new alternator, i know auto zone shouldnt want 500 bucks for a new alternator, a reman should be around 250, i wouldnt buy a brand new oem alternator.
dude go to a junkyard and nab one. i got mine for 40 bux. Bosch remanufactured one too. bosch warranty + 1 year junkyard warranty. hell if you really need i can find one and nab it for ya.

g2ic parts for sale in the us. search forum-- alternator.
first one there is 30 bux. make sure to check for obd1 as the 90-91 default alternators are obd0 (saw you have obd0-1 conversion)

here's a REAL easy way, i did it this way on mine--
1. bleed the breaks
2. remove the brake master cylinder
3. remove the driver's side wheel
4. undo the bottom bolt of the alternator
5. undo the top bolt of the alternator
you should be able to wiggle it loose and take off the belt, pull it out through the top, removed the BMS gives you just enough room to wedge it in and out. a LOT less of a hassle than removing the entire damn axle
6. put the bottom bolt in first but dont tighten it all the way.
7. put the belt back on the new alternator, tip the top of it towards the wall as far as it will go
8. tighten the top bolt
9. tighten the bottom bolt
10. put the brake master cylinder back on and re-bleed the brakes.
voila!
you should be able to do most of the install from over the bay, makes it quite easy, only thing you have to do thats kinda a pain is tighten the bottom bolt, which you can get to by having the tire off, not even having to get under it. "
