CTR Cam Info Needed!!!
Guys,
This has been briefly discussed before and I did a search with no help. Here are my questions...... I have a stock GSR motor and I want to put CTR cams in it. I am planning on keeping the redline stock at the moment, but I am trying to price out the valve train upgrades neccessary to rev higher. What is the most common setup and can someone give me an idea on prices? I was thinking ITR valves, Ti retainers and portflow springs. How is this setup? Also, how do the CTR cams take to the lower CR of the GSR's? Is it worth it to put new pistons in? BTW, I only have 50k on the motor(OBD1). I know I will need cam gears and a VFAC if I want to tune them, but will I need a FPR with the FPR? I plan on using my stock intake for the moment and when the money comes, go to the skunk mani. What do most people use for a ECU? Finally, what kind of power will this net me? Thanks in advance!

If you're going to go through the hassle of pulling your head & disassembling it for the purposes of installing ITR intake valves (waste of $$$ anyways), you might as well...
a. install a Mugen headgasket ($129)
b. have the head resurfaced to insure flatness ($75)
c. install 98+ spec JDM ITR valvesprings ($150 + labor)
d. install Portflow Ti retainers ($160)
Now if you've got the car up & want to pull the pistons out with the motor still in the car ($400 for labor alone), you might as well stick in some JDM ITR pistons ($400 with rings).
Most tuning shops will tell you to come in with the following if you want to tune your VTEC engine:
1. FPR & gauge
2. adjustable cam gears
3a. AFC of some sort (VAFC, Fields)
3b. the only thing the ECU is really good for is to kill the rev-limiter
You can address 3a & 3b by getting something like a Hondata.
CTR cams by themselves? Try 6-9 whp.

i'll answer a few...
you would be fine with itr valve springs and some titanium retainers...a good redline would be about 9k rpms...after this the CTR cams won't do you any good...actually 9k might be high, i'm not sure, some others will know better.
high comp pistons are a very worthy mod in my opinion, they will give you a torque increase accross the board that is very worth the money

a few things:
i would suggest CTR intake and ITR exhaust cams
valves - you only need intake. exhaust valves are same part number as gsr.
springs - get itr dual intake. use the gsr intake inners with the gsr exhaust to make dual exhaust.
before you do all this, be as sure as you can that you're not gonna get more aggressive cams a year from now (jun 2s or 3s, toda Bs or Cs).

yeah, for now, you can just drop them in. They pull good to 8K in a GSR. If you're going to remove you head, there is no point in putting in ITR springs, just get Toda/JUN/Crower springs. Those are good to like 10K (the JUN and Toda) and you'll have no worries (I've had ITR springs fail at 8.5-9K).
In my ITR motor, the CTR cams pulled good to 9K. Your power will drop of though, unless you get the skunk manifold, bolt-ons, etc, etc. HTH,- C

hey C,
what the fuel cutoff for the JDM ITR?
i believe it's higher than the USDM, right?
man, googling around...there is SO MUCH misinformation out there!
peeps keep copying and pasting the same sht on their sites.

You can get JUN/Toda stuff from any supplier. The JUN springs cost me $300 a year ago for all 32 springs good to 10K+. Stiff as hell. I just like having no worries. -C
I was just talking with a buddy about doing a CTR intake cam for my ITR! Thanks for the info guys... I think this setup is a great performance gainer for the guys that want to gain a little without having to tune alot. I mean just out of the box with the stock settings I've heard that it gains well. Now coupled with some other mods I've heard, it gains even more.
What are some realistic Numbers for gains accross the board with the simple drop in of the CTR intake cam to the ITR Powertrain?
thanks guys, I love to learn more.
