I have asked CHP here in sac county and they said ANYTHING other than stock is illegal. SO i take my apexi N1 off after getting 3 tickets and put my STOCK LS muffler on. I get pulled over for 50 in a 40 (yeah GAY) and the CHP hassled me about the stock LS tip. I honestly think they are pulling imports over for anything and everything now and just trying to be dick faces. They have gotten really desprate now, it's sad.

 

id just try and ask your local law enforcement or look at thier webpage online if they have one....in florida, we have that crappy law that anything louder than stock is illegal...i found this out after i got my ticket and did some research....the reason i got the greddy sp is cuz its quiet, i just thought that anything loud (which mine is not) is illegal.....stupidest thing i ever heard cuz a lot of stock cars come louder than my current set up, so yeah, like dfreezy said, if your stock muffler craps out and you gotta get a new one, you gotta get oem or oem equivanlent.

I got pulled over in Sac last month and they told me the same thing. Everything is illegal...Even if its CARB exempt!!!! Headers/Intake?exaust/Adjustable Cam Gears

yeah most state laws suck, but there are few rural counties in somes states where there are no laws on exhaust mods!

 

If it has something to do w/ emissions and it came w/ a CARB E.O. #, it is street legal in all the 50 states. However, certain counties, and cities have their ordinances that can limit the amont of noise; for example, 90db or so in some counties.
As for the CHP, they're nothing more than glorified meter maids. If they give u a ticket and send you to a ref, prove to the ref and the judge that your **** is legit and the judge will most likely dismiss the case.

 

Its supposed to be legal if the exhaust is 93db at 3500 rpm. But if a state law says that it is illegal it will over ride any federal law as far as CARB and EPA standards are concerned, due to the fact that Cali has the strictest standards. But I have known people who went to the Ref and got some tests done and they approved the exhaust for legality in Cal. Either way california sucks, Im glad they are pulling over sub 16 second cars for "modified" exhaust when they could be catching rapists and murderers, or people ACTUALLY breaking laws.

 

Doesn't a product have to pass California Air Resource Bureau standards, EPA egulations and CA state laws before it is granted a CARB E.O.?
The manufacturer invests money for testing and cutting through the red tape to make a street legal product. Thats why an intake w/o CARB EO# could be only ~$20 but an AEM one goes for ~$150

We can rant all we want about how things should be a certain way, but the truth of the matter is you can't have an aftermarket exhaust legally in most of southern california, regardless of carb EO. I know its ridiculous, but we have to face the facts. And yes, there are huge trucks riding around w/ loud exhausts and motorcyles that have exhaust which is so loud it literally hurts my ears when they floor it, but we are screwed when it comes to that. You would think cops had better things to do and would follow up on more important law violations instead of petty offenses; but I guess they do what they do b/c the state makes its money to pay there bills off traffic tickets!

I agree! There are better ways to do things, in which they could change the laws to make both sides happy, however to state law makers this isnt a big issue and therefore no resolution would come about until after several years if ppl were to stand up and complain to the state gov't!

 

I think it varies by the cop. I had a loud exhast on my teg for 2+years. Then i got a ticket for not comming to a full stop(opps) and he got me for the exhaust also. It passed smog and everything. Then i come to find out it was no longer a fix-it ticket, so not only did i pay for a new silincer i also had to pay the fine. This was in LA county by a LA sherrif.

Well, you shouldn't complain about getting pulled over for 50 in a 40. It is illegal and was it really worth it so save the 30 seconds?

In regards to pulling imports over, I've been pulled over twice in the last 2 years, and the last was because I (more or less) was about to pull a U-turn in an intersection right in front of 2 motorcycle cops. So, I turned a little right, and then just made the left turn after all, very erratic driving. All they really did was give me a sobriety test, then a different sobriety test (they said I smelled like beer, and it was outside of a bar; but it was my passenger who was having the beers, I just had scotch at the last bar ) and then just wrote me a ticket for my tint and let me go. I'm running 15/5 so yeah, its illegal. But I've never been given **** for anything else, and its a red gs-r. The first time I was pulled over in this car was for burning out, then going 65 in a 35, while completely buzzed. I got a warning and 5 minute lecture.

For exhaust noise, changed parts, legality. I've been rolling in my 79 Triumph Spitfire for 10 years now with header, and just glass packs. Its split behind the dif and again at the tips, so its got 4, 3", "resonator" tips. Rough guestimate, but I'd say well over 110 db at WOT. You can't talk in the car without shouting. Never had any issues with it with cops, though I did get pulled over and warned for doing 70 in a 45 once. I can't believe I thought it was cool to be that loud when I was 16... Car is for sale or trade if anyone wants to change from Japanese cars to a British roadster...

I seriously don't understand how so many of you have such troubles with the cops. And yes, I live in socal.

 

yea i live in Bmore and i dont know if it is the same out there as it is here but you cant make any changes to your stock exhaust.

I have been pulled over for improper exhaust.. No speeding or anything the cop was a ***** said i need to take everything off of my car it was all illegal.. He said in Fairfax county Virginia it is illegal to modify your car with anything that doesn’t come from the dealership that your car is made from... I have also been pulled over for going 75 in a 30mph zone by a Herndon Police Officer, maybe 1 mile away from the last time and he told me "Your not in a drag race son, Please slow down, by the way nice car have a nice night" and i drove home with a jumping heart but no ticket, go figure.. All i know is I am scared to drive my car in most of Fairfax county KNOWING that they can and will pull you over for just your exhaust.. And it has nothing to do with CARB stickers or Noise it has to do with the local laws..

cops will do anything to have an excuse to pull anybody with an exhaust over you go have it signed off and rinse and repeat. This is the majority of cops and not all but its an endless cycle

Go for anthing that looks stock and nothign will happen

this goes for no front plates/clear corners/dropped to low/lights/etc...

ive had many tickets for all these especially exhaust...and once again with papers they still want to give fixing tickets and then sign off as usual

Good luck on ur decision my personal taste is an itr exhaust so its not much of a attention grabber to cops and thieves

as i talked to one of the state ref's a while back about carb exempt he told me that they screw people over being smog legal but not street legal so theres ur ticket...

 

I wonder if there are any cops that come in here or people that have cops in the familly. It would help some kind of advise and input from them besides ours and see the story from their side. Maybe tips to keep us from getting a ticket. specially with the 50 state legal stuff that we buy and still get a ticket for.
Also remember this is their business and lot of states make their money from tickets and gets cops promoted so it gives them a reason to be after us
