clutch or tranny problem?
Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out. I'm not really mechanically inclined like most of you here, but here goes:
It started one day, I couldn't get it to first. But I could put it in reverse then put it to first. I have a 1996 integra non vtech. Sometimes I couldnt' even get it into 5th. Soon then after I drove it to winstar casino about 1 and a half hours from my house. Gambled for a little bit then left. As I was leaving the casino my car like stalled out on second. Soon then after I couldn't shift to any gears. My car starts but when I let go of the clutch in neutral it stalls. So then I was like WTF. I revved the car and it started moving while in neutral. I could go on neutral and then after I hit maybe 20 miles per hour it just dies. I open the hood and see smoke coming from the transmission area. Also when I push the car it sounds like when the car moves it goes "dunk, dunk, dunk" as if something from inside is hitting the ground while the car moves.
That's basically it. Someone said it might be the differential or something but I really have no idea and want a second opinion.
Thanks for reading, and thanks for the future responses. Hopefully someone will have the answer.

Sounds like you could have a few things wrong. Does
your clutch feel normal? Does it engage off the floor or closer to the top? Sounds like your clutch isn't disengaging, which would could kinda explain why you stalled out in neutral and why the car moved when revved up, the only thing is, if you were in nuetral nothing should have happened. Usually that's something that is attributed to being in gear with the clutch depressed. Looking at the clutch and clutch components is where I would start. Make sure you have clutch fluid in the resivour, make sure there are no leaks comming from the master cylinder or slave cylinder first. To check the master cylinder, check on the firewall near the clutch pedal for any wetness. To check the slave, you need to look for fluid on the front of the trans where you see the rubber cover. You might have to feel around there. Do a little searching and good luck.

Geez that's alot of stuff for a car illerate someone like me. So can we rule out the transmission? The thing is I already took out my transmission. Is there any way to see if my clutch is defective?
Thanks alot I really appreciate your reply.

Can't really rule anything out. It also sounds like you could have a few problems, not just one causing everything. You can look for broken splines on the pressure plate, broken spring on the clutch disk if you have a sprung disk, hot spots on the flywheel. With what you described though, I would really be looking more at the hydrolic system and preassure plate. Not sure how to tell when a pp goes bad though.
