Default cleaning engine

what methods/techniques do you guys use to clean your engine. i have a disassembled short block and i want it shiny new. i was told brake cleaner/ engine degreaser would work but there are still marks. will bleach or muriatic acid work without eating away the aluminum and bolts? also where can i get some high temp aluminum spray paint locally and what brand do you guys recommend? thanks in advance

Use old gas to clean your bolts. It works a lot better.

i got the bleach, doesn't seem to work on the bolts, i'll leave it in bleach for a day and see how it looks like. i couldn't find a fine wheel so i'll be using a course one on the brackets, not the block. gasoline for cleaning? i can imagine it eating up things...

Nah, man. It works like a champ to clean factory bolts. Nothing works better to get grease of your bolts, trust me, try it.

I just got a parts washer w/ solvent so I'll be using that to clean various things when I pull my engine out.

Well, nothing works better (except a parts washer) to get grease off your old bolts. I guess gas would be the poor mans parts solvent.

I would steam clean or pressure wash. Acid or base (bleach) are not good idea.

yeah i threw the thermostat housing in bleach for about five minutes and the thing was bubbling, i think the bleach was eating it up. the bolts are turning rather dull than shiny, a day in soak now.
