Default CEL code 17: VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

My speedo hasn't worked since I re-installed my motor and my cruise control also quit on me (both were functional before the motor was pulled). I've heard that these two problems combined is a tell-tale sign that my VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is bad.

I checked my CEL code and sure enough, code 17: VSS defective circuit or unplugged / defective sensor.

Here's where I'm confused: I knew that it was gonna throw that code, so I already got my hands on two complete VSS's from the shop that re-assembled the motor. I swapped the sensor part from one of them on and had no luck. So, with the second one, I installed the whole thing and still no luck!!!

What are the chances of replacing the fu*king thing twice with two units that were already bad? Does anyone have any other ideas on what else to troubleshoot?

Thank you in advance,

Aaron

I have the same problem, but I didn't swap my engine. Did you ever get it working?

What Wiring?? I have tried two VSS units and a new gauge cluster. Still no speedo. I have checked all the fuses. What causes the VSS code to come on? Is it that the actuall sensor is bad or is it that it is not spinning?

follow the wiring from your VSS and make sure that there are no ruptures in it. I had a slight cut on mine and it prevented the vtec and speedo from working

Did that make you throw a VSS code?

Well....lets think about what connects those two items.....oh wait....its wiring. Thats great that you replaced the VSS and the cluster, too bad that if the wiring bewteen the two is broken or bad neither will be able to send or receive a signal.

Yes, duh, how could I have not known what you where talking about from your detailed answer. I asked the original poster if he got it working and you said "wiring". Thanks for the help.
