Default CA Ref. Ticket

Hello H-T.. I'm in need of some serious help.

I just got a Ref. ticket today by PCC in Pasadena, one for modified emission and the other for exhaust. I've been looking around the forums and been reading about this topic. My question is "What really is the BEST way to handle this situation?" There is no way for me to put my car back to stock. It's an LS-V, Stg. 2 cams, aftermarket headers, no cat, on crome.

1. Pay the fine? And if I do, do I still need to go to a Ref?
2. Does the "Sell it to a friend" trick still work?

Thanks guys, really looking forward to your replies. :'(

What kind of car do you have? When i got my ref ticket, i had to do both pay fine and ref inspection. If you have to do the same, then i would put the stock motor back with all the emissions stuff. If not then just pay the fine. As for "selling it to a friend" i have no idea about that.

I got a 98 DC4.. When did you get your ticket? What I meant on the second option is that I'll pretend that I sold my car to a friend and from there on the judge will just write me a fix it ticket. But from what I was reading in the forum, they don't buy that anymore and I still have to pay a fine regardless. :/

I got mine a year ago i think, but laws may have changed. I dont think they will buy it seeing that your name is on the ticket and the car is registered in your name.

Put the emissions equipment back on the car and stop polluting the air that all of us have to breathe.

Paying the fine won't fix it. The car has to be street legal. You'll have to fix it.

You have no idea what you're talking about. California is so strapped for cash Police Officers are handing out ticktes left and right for B.S. reasons, and praying that people cave in and just pay the fines.

OP,
Go to the court house, tell the clerk you're going to register the car as a non-op and use it strictly for track use. Pay the $500 fine and get it over with.
I did this several months ago, since then, I got pulled over for window tint on the front windows and nothing about the modified emission ticket was even mentioned by the police office.

Great idea - lying in court. It's a crime, called "perjury".

You're lucky. If you were found driving a car registered as track use on the street, you could get a ticket for that - and it will be a bigger ticket than the one you're looking at now.

Wow, you amateur lawyers sure like to give advice that's going to get other people into a whole lot of trouble. And if someone gets stuck with charges as a result, "I saw it on the internet" isn't going to get them out of those charges.

Listen here kid, you got a lenient judge. The BS reasons you say that the CHP and PD's are handing out tickets are actually traffic or vehicle code violations. You might not agree with the laws but they are what they are. OP, don't go in and try to lie to the judge. Do things right and you wont be hasttled in the future.

just pay off the ticket. in california once the ticket is paid, its over. you dont need to fix anything or do anything further.
if you get pulled over again, your stuck in the same boat, thats the only draw back.

and the my friend bought it doesnt work, its still the persons responsibilty to take care of the ticket.

He speaks the truth.

I suggest you pay the fine so you don't have to see the Ref. THEN put your stock intake, header, and run a stock or low profile muffler to LOWER the chances of this happening again. Even though you have a Vtec head just make your engine look unmodified to decrease your chances. Not all cops know what Vtec head is or look at the engine stamp.

I also learned the hardway. But thank God I got lucky in the end..Here is my thread.

Goodluck man
thank you.
although i would have to say many cops are starting to learn more about modified honda's, for example about swap, ex. what motor should and shouldnt be in the car.

your looking at spending any where from 300+ to be honest. i know that a adjustable fuel pressure regulator runs about 260 from what i've seen on tickets to bail it.

another idea to "trick" an officer is shave the vtec off the valve cover. i know of a few people that have done that, and its much harder for a cop to reconize a vtec from a non vtec head.

if you take it to court and plead guilty and just want to pay it off, depending on the judge he'll lower your ticket.

and jerry, alot of cops in the san jose area can be cool but others can be straight ********. like andrew got his car impounded for "street racing" and a bunch of stupid modified shiiit, while i got pulled over on bailey when i had a swap and turbo in my EG and he let me go.

just depends on the cop that decides to mess with you

^ Very true, and just depends on how you greet the officer/talk to him or her. IDK man cops are the reason why I shake when it comes to messing with my motor.. =/ My homie with an EJ1 had an Injen intake with the CARB sticker and he got a Ref. ticket. WTF right? There were 2 holes in the intake and he only had one line. He didn't plug up the other one but I still think its stupid.

I got a ticket for modified emissions also (intake only). I didn't have a carb legal intake. After that incident I don't even wanna run a carb legal intake because there are cops that will STILL send you to the Ref. for verification. So I'm trying to avoid a Ref. ticket as much as possible by running a stock looking engine bay now. If I had a legal motor I wouldn't mind running carb legal/illegal parts that can easily be interchanged. Since I don't want to replace my motor this is the route I'm taking.

Keep us updated man

Okay, i got an modifie emissions ticket for my short ram intake. its a small intake on my b21 inside my 1990 prelude. Now i was reading somewhere about it being legal if my car never had a mass airflow sensor. Can anyone help me on this? i dont want to put the stock one back on, i dont have it. id have to go searching for one. My short ram i got at some local JDM shop and it doesnt have the carb legal sticker, but again, i read that you dont need that if you dont have a Mass airflow sensor. help me haha.

pay the ticket....thats all you have to do and then you won't have to ref it. but if you get caught again you gonna have another ticket. I had a ticket once when i had a ls in my hb. all i did was pay the fine and they dismissed my case or ticket.
