Default Brake pedal drops to the floor. WTF Is going on?

I was driving today and on the way one everytime I braked lightly the pedal will slowly fall to the floor. If I brake hard I have good pressure on the pedal. The weird thing is everytime I let go of the brake and the brake travels up, I hear a slight thump and the brake pressure is back to normal untill I press on it slightly again. Then it goes back down to the floor. Is this my master cylinder thats fubar or the brake booster?

I second the master cylinder.
The booster failing would not allow the pedal to travel to the floor.

Is it possible to do on my own or let the professionals handle it?

If you have to ask the question, no offense, you should consider taking it to a shop.
Otherwise, if you have time and place to do the work, invest in a Helms shop manual and some tools, and you will thank yourself in the long run.
Good luck......and let us know how it all turns out.

First check for any leaks in the brake system. If there are no leaks
present, then I would try bleeding the system. Did you have any brake
work done recently? If your pedal is still low, then I would go after the
master cylinder.

and yes, brake pedal going to the floor means change your master cylinder ASAP. It is going to fail if you don't.

Don't forget to bench bleed the M/C too, otherwise it will take forever to bleed them.

Fixed it myself. Looked to be contamination. I think the previous owner poured some oil in the Master Cylinder... Contamination caused seals to get damaged. Bought the master cylinder for around $75. About an hours with of work. Wasnt that hard at all.

Yea that's some good ish... I remember fixing the MC was one of the first things I learned how to do. Now I get that feeling of "accomplishment" every time I hit my brakes.

Not to be a cause for further worry, but if a petroleum based liquid (such as oil, etc.) was poured into your master cylinder, it will not only cause the MC seals to fail, but also the piston seals in your calipers to fail. Just something to consider.
