No, a BOV is a critical component of a turbo setup. Here's the best illustration I can give of what a BOV does (hopefully I remember it right).

Imagine sucking on a straw, and all of a sudden plugging the end. The sudden shock messes up the straw and kinda hurts your mouth if it were to happen a lot. Now imagine that when you plug the end, the side opens up to release that pressure, giving you a chance to stop w/out damaging the straw or your mouth. It's the same concept with the throttle plate (i think!).

Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Yeah, that pretty much somes it up, just an area to release pressue. It's a must, there's a reason why a BOV comes with a setup, and its not just for the noise.

Even though it is one of the sexiest noises out there IMO.

Your stories are true....however, NOT with cars like ours. Our intake system uses a MAP sensor instead of many other cars which use a MAF. In some cases, a BOV may affect that system differently.

One that fits your budget and works well. NOT one that sounds "uber cool and loud". I had the HKS Super Sequential. Great BOV.

To answer the question since I didn't see anybody fully answer it...... the bov can screw with your idle if it's leaking. That's because the screw is usually too loose because people like to loosen up the screw a lot to allow the bov to 'make the sound last longer' while releasing boost into the atmosphere. The best way to adjust it is to start the car and let it idle, and adjust the bov screw until you cannot feel any air coming out of it.
