Default b18b1 idle problem

when i cold start my car...the rpm gauge goes up and quickly goes back down to zero and my car simply dies...the problem keeps occurring constantly unless i keep my foot on the gas pedal...or til the engine is warm up but still it keeps idling at 500 rpm only...iwhen i turn on the headlights..the engine seems as if its gonna die off and when i turn off the lights...the idling barely climbs back up to 500 rpm...what is the cause of this? how do i diagnose this problem... i have a 1998 hatchback with a b18b1 motorand im using a b16 tranny...

timing not happening where it should will absolutely cause this condition. how many degrees BTDC are you getting spark?
