Default Automatic trans question

First off- I already looked in the FAQ's, and did a search, so sorry if this answer is already on these boards.
Anyway, my brother just got an auto 1992 Integra GS from my uncle. I was just wondering what the S3 and S4 gears are. I only drove it for like 2 minutes and didn't get to play around with it, so i didn't check it out at all. I', guessing its some type of extra overdrive or something... any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do you mean D3 and D4?

D3 "sets" the transmission where it goes through each gear, however, it doesn't go higher than 3rd gear. It'll go through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and that's it.

D4 is the normal drive gear. The car is a 4-speed automatic, so it goes through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears when the lever is put in that position.

Since you're talking about autos, is it bad for the engine/transmission to drive around in D3 going no faster than 45-50 MPH?

Well, it goes like this, on the Dashboard (i can't remember what it said on the shifter console) it when from P-N-D- then S3 & S4 side to side, then 2-1 i think.
D, my gues would be normal driving. So it's pretty much just got a mode to set it to only got to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or all 4 gears? Thats funny, so its kinda like a semi- manual?

It goes 2nd, s3, s4, Drive. s3 is best used for slowing down and getting much needed torque. This explains the option of s3, s4- you can toggle between the gears with the button and works best on back roads-the thing is the torque converter, which acts as a 5th gear that autos dont have ....s3 and s4 eliminate the torque converter.

to get the best acceleration in an automatic, especially on the highway first downshift into 3rd then mash the pedal then just simply put the car back into drive and you'll notice it go into 4th then "5th" (torque converter kicks in). If you wanna avoid that use the button and enable 4th gear only.

Top speed with i/h/e for me is 130mph
best launch is at 4500rpm- with good tires youll be through a quarter mile in 16 seconds.
