Default alternator problem?

My car stereo died out, the tach went all crazy... jumping up and down, and after a while i tried to start my car but it wouldn't start. So I jumped started it. My friend said that it could be the alternator. But some of my other friends are saying that it could be something else.

Did this happen while the car was running or just with the ignition on???

After jumpstarting it have you had any more problems starting it, or with the stereo and tach?

we'll right after i jumped started it. everything was working fine until a couple of seconds the radio died. tach wasn't working anymore and i always had to keep my feet on the pedal so that the car wouldn't die.

sounds 2 me like the alternators playing up. I cant think of anything else it could be. Obviously it has to be some sort of electrical problem

Im not to sure, sounds like some stuff has been fried though, possibly from a faulty alternator.
