Default adjusting timing - need quick help please!

hey guys,

3 days ago, I checked my timing and advanced it a little... tomorrow night, i'll be taking a 300+km trip, and I wanna be sure it's ok for my engine...

since I didn't had an adjustable timing light, I did it the ghettto way. Right now, the red mark on the crank pulley is at about 5 millimeters of the timing belt cover pointer(firewall side). Do you guys have any idea of what my timing is at right now?

do you know what one degree gives on the crank pulley mark?

I'm currently running 91 octane gas, which I heard hepls a lot with advanced timing, but I don't wanna see my engine go boom!

The engine seems to run smooth and nice, would I notice something if the timing was too much advanced?

Thanks a lot!!!

I understood that the higher the timing the higher octane gas needed, I could be wrong. As for the timing it's should be 16 +/- 2. I'm pretty sure 5mm is to advanced try 2-3mm to be safe.

I agree Anthony...I think it might be too much, plus you do need to run a higher octane gas or your motor will start to ping.

You'll hear it most with a heavy load like going up a steap hill, or a car full of people. One thing for sure! Use higher octane.

In the process of advancing the timing with a timing gun,

When pointing the gun to the belt where the indicators would be,

should those be steady STEADY (I mean the indicators, there are three that are right next to each other and the other white one, btdc)

coz mine moves like a quarter of an inch up n down so i jus guestimate wen its in the middle

i set it to 18 advance

I only have a red mark and the white one...

i'll try to borrow an adjustable timing light, it's gonna be easier!

thanks for the replies!
