92 LS in hatch
We did a swap and put a 1992 b18a1 into a 90 hatchback. It ran fine the night we got it out then all of the sudden died out. We think the timing belt had strechted due to being old and the timing was a lil off. Today we put a new belt on and got nothing. The timing is right. It has spark and gets fuel. Its a 1992 Ls obd0 pr4 Ecu and distributor, obd1 injectors. Any ideas? the only sign we got was it was backfiring out the exhaust. No ecu codes. everything is hooked up nothing came unplugged. Some help is appreciated.
Are you absolutely positively 100% sure you got the timing right? Did you swap out the entire car harness? If not, was the hatchback originally equipped with dual-point or multi-point injection?
It was DP and I did the conversion to MPFI. We used pieces off the obd1 ls harness. like i repinned the dizzy clips and certain sensors that were extended. It ran fine for one night and he was about to park and it stalled out. After that it hasnt started since. We deff know the timing belt was old due to shortly after trying to break loose the crank pulley bolt we snapped the belt. I mean we locked the cams in place and I lined up the oil pump marker on block with the line on the gear. Any thing I could be missing?
I mean I did this 3-4 times already that was my first guess... But as to why would it be backfiring. I mean I kno if its not firing at the right times it woulf back fire out the intake but the exhaust. Idk Im out of ideas and I feel bad for this kid. Hes stuck without his car and he has no money to pay for a mechanic to look at it. Also most mechanics are jerks about stuff and kno absolutely nothing about swaps. I dont understand how it was running fine then all the sudden stopped. I mean if the wiring came loose it would throw a crank angle, fuel injector or ignition code on the ecu being as too those are the only things changed within the swap.
That was my next step tomorrow. The next door neighbor with a 10 sec corvette (We call him the mad scientist because he knows any and everything) was gonna let me borrow the compression tester tomorrow to check it. But besides that you think anything else?

Beer usually helps me solve problems like this one.

you should also check the ground on the thermostat, when i put my built gsr motor back in, it didnt start up because it wasnt getting good enough connection (it was loose) and i also got fuel and spark, so im not sure why it wouldnt start then!

1 Check your grounds!
2 Check your sparkplug wires! Make sure they are the right firing order. I get calls all the time from ppl with the same problem as you, and it is the wires.
3 Check your spark plugs! I would get new ones.
4 Are you sure the cams are TDC with the crank!
Just a few checks as well to add.

the only thing I didnt check was spark plugs. everything else was good... All those grounds are connected and the wires are in the right order... that was the first thing i checked cuz that is what was wrong with my car and kept me stumped for almost 2 weeks. Its at tdc idk what else to check... Why would it be backfiring out the exhaust?? it seems to me that all the valves are opening and closing right if i start it withot the valve cover.
