1998 Engine Bogs Down after Hwy
I need some experienced help. This is hooky but I am in the military on a really tight budget and I just need to get the car 600 miles next week to somewhere that I have all the tools, free scanner, etc. to fix this right.
Background -
1.8 ltr , manual transmission
1. Car runs good cold.
2. Car runs okay at highway speeds.
3. Car bogs down really heavy after highway driving.
4. Temp gauge slightly higher than normal but still in bottom 1/3 of range. No air bubbles, themostat is ok.
5. Pretty sure it isn't "bad gas" (gone through several tanks)
Replaced ETC sensor (because it is cheap and easy). No joy.
Have a CEL on but dont know the codes (ya it would be a lot easier if I did, but California no longer has free code reading places) so that has to wait till next week.
18 months ago, Crankshaft Position Sensor housing (under timing belt cover), busted and wasn't pointed at shaft. Dealer and local parts stores didn't have the part so I epoxied the part to backing sheet and re-attached. Worked great. Could it be busted again? Maybe, but the driving performance is a little different. It will have to wait the 600 miles to find out.
Questions - Given that it runs great cold...
1. If I disconnect the Crankshaft position sensor cable will it default to open loop "cold" performance?
2. Same question for primary O2 sensor.
3. Can I trick the system to "cold" performance by connecting the old ECT sensor up and just leaving it exposed to engine compartment airflow (instead of coollent)?
4. Any other cheap ideas for causes to this driving condition other than replacing spark plugs?
Again, I know coil and ICM, and I can find and fix it right when I have all the tools and time. But I am just looking for ideas, that might be cheap/easy, to get me the next 600 miles in better shape.
TIA
