Re: ***How-To Clean*** Your IACV a.k.a. Idle Air Control Valve (howard-zhang)
hey guys--i just solved the problem w/ my 94 GS-R dropping idle to 500rpms/dimming headlights and eventually dying on me while at idle at a stop after my vehicle has been warmed up to operating temps. i solved this problem by cleaning out these three components: IACV, FITV, and throttle body butterfly. the problem now is that i have coolant leaking from my IACV...i believe its leaking from the bottom square plate w/ 2 bolts that covers a thin gasket in a narrow groove. i tried purchasing this gasket at the dealer but, they say that's not a serviceable part so they don't selll it! i wanted to see if anyone has a similar problem and what did you do to solve your coolant leak? i was thinking i could make my own gasket w/ some permatex gasket maker or does anybody know if i can order this gasket online or if there is an aftermarket gasket available? any help or information would be much appreciated...
howard: i would check and clean out your FITV if your experiencing idle flucuations as this part controls your idle speed after startup and when your englne is cold then switches over to the IACV after your car has reached operating temps. to control idle when at a stop.
thank you.

i have an 89 integra. same problem of pulsating idle when warm - 750 - 1500 rpm. went to clean the iacv, but doesn't have one. has an electronic control valve (ecv) that has the coolant hoses attached to. took it off, but can't open it up to clean anything. any suggestions - any other things to check? what happens if i unplug it?

Just clean out the openings that mate to the intake manifold with carb cleaner.

I think you need a new IACV if cleaning it does not change anything.

Use channel locks or vise grip pliers to loosen the bolt and remove them by hand. Then buy yourself some new bolts.

replaced the iacv with a junkyard one and same problem. turned down the air? screw on the left side of the manifold - way down. idle smoothed out and looks back to normal. i think i had multiple problems and iacv could still have been one of them.

Can anyone tell me if the IACV has a one way check valve so coolant only goes one way?

The harness clips into the IACV from the bottom. If you are talking about the coolant lines...I dont think its that important that you have the coolant lines in the right places, but the nipple closest to the throttle body has a coolant line that runs under the tb. The other line goes to the other nipple that runs to the back of the block.

I have a b20vtec swap....my car idles at 1500 when motor is cool but once it heats up idle goes down......car shakes then idle goes up again.....after i drive it for a lil bit coming to a stop and pressing on the clutch automatically shuts my car of because my idle is to low....cleaned my iacv and still does the same once the car is heated...any ideas why?

Re: (mouab18c1)
Hey,
Just recently I started noticing that when I put my car in neutral or just rev my car that the revs seem to drop a lot below idle. Goes down to 600 sometimes and takes a while to get back up to idle sometimes which is at 1000 rpm when at a stop. When im driving and put the car in neutral so its still rilling the revs seem to drop and stay around 700-800 rpms and not go back up to 1000 which is a normal idle untill I stop and still does go up pretty slowly.
Does this sound like the IAVC or the FITV?

Your links didn't work.
Note: IF you are going to clean out the IACV. You might as well replace the O2 sensor. That sensor has a lot to dowith a smoother running engine. Plus, this all works if you have a somewhat stock set up. If its altered, your going to want to get it tuned professionally unless you have the tools and know how to fix and adjust it right.
