Well it's been quite a while and the build has taken a slightly new direction. Still SOHC NonVTEC just not a B2 head anymore. Not after picking up a "blown" one of these....

1 bent valve, other than that the head is in good shape...

Nice looking intake ports, the exhaust ports look even more promising. Compared to the B2 ports anyway.

This also means that the ITB's will be getting a make over as well. Need to cut off the F22B intake flange and weld on an A1 flange....wouldn't want to ruin a good A6 intake manifold...lol

Updates to follow.

Yeah it's spring time. That means time to open up the garage door and do some dirty work.

Know what you mean. In the last couple of weeks I've been finishing up the "next motor" for the Chevelle, couple of hundred miles south of you so its been warmer here for about a month.

Good luck....I'll shut up, your thread and a nice one so I don't won't to intrude. I'll just read from here.

Don't worry about intruding, this is a technical discussion forum. That's fine if people don't want to read the in between banter. I find posting a few pictures typically brings their attention back to the build.

What engine are you building for the Chevelle? I have a 383 stroker and a 1975 500 BB sitting under the work bench in my garage. I want to drop the 500 into a 74 Vette if I ever have the money.

We all know how much people like visuals

Here is a comparison of the air cooled F22A1-6 exhaust ports (top) and the water cooled exhaust ports on the F22B2 (bottom)

Note the red highlighted area, that is the water jacket that completely surrounds the exhaust ports. Kind of makes it hard to manipulate them too much.

Here is a visual representation of when I say straight through flow.

A1-6 on the left B2 on the right. (I know the A6 needs cleaning...) All of the B1-2 exhaust ports have this curve to them. All 4 A1-6 exhaust ports are pretty much straight shots.

and here is a comparison of the intake ports.

A1-6 on the left B-2 on the right. Don't think there is much needed to be said here.

Wow what a difference in the ports! A picture is worth a thousand words. What are you doing w/ that A6 cam?

No plans as of yet. I have 3 F22 cams, a custom grind, a B2 and now the A6. I was planning on getting a Bisi level 3. Maybe give him both cams and see what kind of deal I might be able to swing.

How much is it worth to you

Actually going for a SB 327 on E85 with a supercharger.....the cooling aspects of E85 have me interrested. We'll see what it does and how much I can overdrive it before she goes......then see what else comes to mind. Really the last one from here...Thanks.

^^SC SB 327, Nice! My 383 has a set of 202s on it. Probably going to upgrade to some new aluminum ones though

On with the build........ Blog update!

With the new head comes the pain of having to remodel the B2 ITBs.

Blog link............

More updates coming soon!

Its about time! ;D

But wow what a difference in those ports. I knew the intake were different and the exhaust were different but no way did i know the exhaust were that different. Do you know of any reason why the F22B's have water cooled exhaust ports? Doesnt seem like it would be for any performance reason.

But wow those B2 ports looks sloppy. My B2 is still in the car, but my A1 head i have for the new engine looks darn good for stock ports. Are you planing any more home brew head porting with that A series head? Or just some clean up and bowl work like it looks like you did. Also any idea what kind of valves you will be working with? I must say the bisimoto SS oversized set is looking like a steal at their current price. Just wish they had a stock size available. 2mm intake and 1mm ex. seem HUGE for what most people need. (including myself)

There is more info on my blog as to what my plans are for porting this thing.

As for valves, what I bought is a set of stainless 34mm intake and 30mm exhaust. You have to be careful when you buy oversize valves. In turn you may also require larger valve seats to be installed. Not sure about the F series and 2mm OS valves but it would be close.??????

Yeah thats what i was afraid of with those bisimoto ones. they are HUGE compared to other options (1mm or .5mm oversize). But they are pretty cheap compared to the ferrea stainless stock sized ones ill probably be getting once i get a new valve spring compressor.

Just curious... keep it up!

Oh she's going to be a little while yet. Unless you have about $5000 I can borrow.

I'm learning/practicing how to make fiberglass molds to make body panels. It's more time consuming and expensive than I thought.

Now THAT is going all out! Ive always been impressed with your fab work and innovation on this build. What exactly is this car being designed for anyway? Drag?

Also how much weight do you think you can cut down going fiberglass? Just curious how radical that would be ha

It's going to be a summer cruiser / weekend Solo Sprint car. I'm not sure on weight savings as of yet. I haven't completed a full piece to compare. I would image it will be quite the savings. I figure that if I were to take it to the drag strip. I would probably have to add weight to the front for it to hook up properly.

Going to be using a mechanical air pump as a replacement for the vacuum operated PCV system our engines usually incorporate. There was an issue with it but I was able to find the source of the problem.

PCV Air Pump update!

What exactly does that air pump offer that a simple catch can a lot of the crazy drag cars and turbo setups use on here? Just wondering! Theres always a lot to learn from these intense build threads ha

It's just something I picked up for $20 and figured that I would give it a try. Using one of these actually pulls the air out of the crank case vs having to rely on the movement of the pistons at high RPM and or the blow-by to naturally push it's way out.

My intake setup will not have the usual vacuum source to pull anything out of the block and I'm not going to be running this at 8500-9000 RPM on a regular basis. I will be cruising around in it quite a bit. Therefore a vacuum source of some sort will be beneficial.

I've been reading lately that some smaller cc engine guys are actually using these smog pumps (not this one exactly) as superchargers. Some of the bigger ones on the older V8's probably could push a few PSI through them. The one I have is a bit delicate for that type of usage.
