Mighty Mouse Record-Breaking Lap at WTAC 2017

By -

Records are meant to be broken, thankfully, World Time Attack Challenge exists.

If you’re unfamiliar with the name “Mighty Mouse” then you’ve been living under a rock. In the time attack community, it is without a doubt the most popular and recognizable Honda CRX in the world and for good reason. It is bloody fast! Like really, really fast. Earlier this year, the owner and driver of Mighty Mouse, Rob Nguyen announced that World Time Attack Challenge (WTAC) 2017 was going to be the last hurrah for his beloved CRX before going into retirement.

When it was time to put the hammer down at WTAC, Mighty Mouse didn’t disappoint. On Day 1, Rob was able to put down a blistering lap time of 1:26.53. Not only was that enough to put him in provisional 1st place in the ProAm Class, but he broke the class lap record in the process as well. At that point, none of the other competitors were anywhere close to touching Mighty Mouse. However, on Day 2, Rob managed to break his own record and lay down an incredible 1:26.27 lap time. The scary part: He said that he made a small mistake and felt that he could get down to the high 1:25s.

Watching the video, you can see how much concentration is needed to pilot Mighty Mouse. With the supercharged K24 putting down almost 700 horsepower and the short wheelbase, there’s no wonder. Without the aid of all the aero bits, there’s no way the CRX would be able to stay on track. You can hear the car bottom out along the straights. And that’s not because of the CRX’s ride height or uneven track surface. It’s the result of the amount of downforce Mighty Mouse experiences when going at staggering speeds.

It’s sad know that we’ll never see Mighty Mouse battle it out at WTAC, but what a way to end the run with a win and in style! However, Rob did hint at possibly visiting Tsukuba in the future. We’re crossing our fingers! Congrats to Rob and 101 Motorsports for the win!
