2023 Honda Civic Type R

It’s official; the 2023 Honda Civic Type R world premiere is happening on July 20, 2022. Better still, the teaser video gives a sneak peek.

It feels like it has been a lifetime of waiting since we first saw the prototype of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R. Finally, though, we’re seeing light at the end of the tunnel. More than that, actually. We’re just a few steps away from the end of the tunnel. Though there’s a little bit more waiting to do, Honda has given us our first peek at the next-gen Type R without any camouflage hiding its body lines.

In a video recently posted to the Honda YouTube channel, the camouflaged prototype can be seen ripping around various tracks. As we know, the prototypes have spent some time both on the Nurburgring and the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. However, it’s the end of the video that has us all excited. For just a split second, as can be seen in the screenshot above, Honda literally shed some light on the new Type R without any camouflage covering it up. Needless to say, it looks awesome.

Championship White With Red Interior Like the Honda Gods Intended

Based on the sneak preview of the new Type R, it looks like the reveal will wear traditional Championship White. Additionally, the interior appears to be red, as is also traditional of the Type R models. However, Motor1 reports that a leak shows the available colors for the new Type R as black, white, grey, red, and blue. Unsurprisingly after the success of the FK8 Type R LE, Pheonix Yellow did not make the cut. Likely, a limited edition of the 2023 Civic Type R featuring the legendary yellow paint will come sometime down the road.

As is the case with the new-gen Si, only a four-door model will be available. Though it caused quite a stir upon the release of the Si, with many people attacking the four-door layout as being less performance-oriented, nobody seemed to have a problem with it upon release of the outgoing FK8 Civic Type R. You know, the one that held the front-wheel-drive track record at Suzuka until April this year? That seems pretty performance-oriented, but we digress.

Speaking of the FWD Suzuka record, though, the 2023 Civic Type R prototype is the car that took the record from the FK8. Not only does that cement its place in history, but it also cements the fact that the endless all-wheel-drive rumors are untrue and that the new Type R will indeed be front-wheel drive. Of course, the new Type R only took the record by about one second. So, it’s safe to assume the rumors of 400+ horsepower are also untrue.

Ultimately, we can’t say any sort of specifics on power output just yet. However, we’re all in the same boat here. So, we advise you to set a reminder for July 20, 10:00 p.m. EDT / 7:00 p.m. PDT, and put your eyes on Honda’s official reveal of the new Type R. For now, enjoy the teaser video below!
