Civic Type R Reviewed by ‘Captain Slow’ Himself, James May

By -

James May cuts to the chase and tells us exactly what he likes and doesn’t like about the Civic Type R.

Any true car enthusiast is also a fan of both Top Gear (preferably the old one) and The Grand Tour. And you’re also very familiar with the trio of chaps that hosted both – Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond. The greatest group of TV car guys ever also tend to do their own thing from time to time, however. In the case of May, that’s a series of hilarious “Relevant Car Reviews” he posts on DRIVETRIBE‘s YouTube channel.

We’re obviously huge fans of “Captain Slow,” so we were delighted to see that he just reviewed the new Civic Type R. But May’s reviews aren’t quite the same as what you’re used to. Sure, he does point out that the Civic Type R is “fast,” and reveals that he “thinks it looks good.” But then, we delve into the real hard-hitting journalism that matters.

Honda Civic Type R

Like aero. “Well, it has a splitter at the front,” May says. “It has a diffuser at the back. It has these vortex generators. And this. Is that a wing or a spoiler? Well, the definition is, if you can get your head underneath it, it’s a wing.” Heck, you learn something every day, right?

Moving on to the engine, May points out that you can tell this is a powerful machine just by looking at it. “Well it has some red paint on it, so it must be very powerful,” he says. “It also unusually looks rather nice and it says Earth Dreams on it.”

As far as the interior goes, May notes that “it’s excellent, to be honest. It has red accents with sportiness and all the controls fall easily to hand.” He isn’t quite as big a fan of the infotainment and it’s rather slow response time. Rear legroom is a plus, however. “It’s excellent, really, because you can get me and Mark Marquez‘s motorcycle in,” May quips. Boot space also gets a thumbs up as May is able to take a nap back there.

Overall, this relevant Civic Type R review is quite positive. “Is it any good?” May asks out loud. “Yes, it is.” And cutting through all the unnecessary fluff we’ve seen in other reviews, isn’t that all you really need to know?
