Car Throttle’s 3rd Gen Prelude to get K Power!

By -

By following this swap through, Car Throttle could end up with one of the fastest 3rd gen Preludes in the UK.

Hondas and engine swaps seem to go together perfectly. We’ve nearly seen it all, good and bad. Though the Honda Parts Bin has been known to make many swaps easy and accessible, it’s not all roses. Contrary to some opinions, there are downsides to some swaps. We’ve been following Car Throttle’s build of a third generation Honda Prelude. There’s a special place in our hearts for this era of Honda, and we doubt we’re alone!

Alex from Car Throttle is going to swap a K20 into the Prelude project car, but goes through the pros and cons with Lewis Cameron, the owner of Honda Specialist UK. Lewis really knows his stuff, and it’s obvious as you watch him explain the swap to Alex. “It’s just literally mounting the K-series in for me. It’s my biggest part in this [swap],” Lewis explains. Everything else is just a “jigsaw puzzle” that he’s put together numerous times. I wish there was a good local import shop like this near my house!

The specific K-flavor Alex is going for, and there are many, is the K20. “The pros are: obviously very available, very reliable, and really good power out of the box from the factory,” Lewis explains. Modifications are plentiful and basically allow an owner to get as much power as they want from the engine, all off the shelf.

The downsides? Lewis mentions a few, but the one we’ve heard most about is the oil pan. The lowest hanging fruit is the lower-than-stock oil pan that sits low in just about every other chassis, and even more so in the Prelude. The third-gen ‘Lude already has a low hood, so the situation isn’t helped much by the low K20.
