Default 91 gauge cluster with 89 wiring harness question....

Here are pics of the 2 years gauge cluster plugs...

90-91

88-89

I have 2 CRX's one is junk the other is going to be my new racecar. The junk car is an 88-89 and the other is 90-91. I want to use the 91 dash and cluster because they look alot cleaner and nicer in general. But the only problem is I dont have the wiring for the 90-91 anymore. I wasn't planning on using it so I gave it to a friend who needed it more than I did (STUPID MOVE I KNOW!) The 91 CRX that I am doing all this too doesn't have a heater anymore so all I need is to wire up the gauge cluster. I noticed the pictures above of the 2 plugs for both years clusters.
My question is do I need to re-pin the whole plug in the exact order as the ones shown above or do I just need to change a few wires? I really dont know why I am having such a hard time understanding those pics but what does the X's mean?

Thanks for any help in Advance!!

i was planning on throwing the 90 cluster in my 88si but go lazy and havent done the repinning yet

question is, theres a spot for a 3rd plug in the back of the 90 cluster.
i believe i remember it being blue in color when i took it out of the car in the junkyard

I think the red x is for wires that arn't there.

I'm doing the opposite I'm puting a 89 crx cluster in my 90 crx because I have two working 89 clusters and the 90 cluster was opened and messed up by last owner(bad white face gauge install) plus I'm puting the 89 dash in my 90 too. I'm striping the 89 and turning it into a full on race car.

I think the center plug is for the dimming circuit. There one on both the 89 and 90 and they both do the same thing and are the same color. ( don't put $ on what I say I will look in both of my cars tomarrow to confirm this)

What are you going to do? Are you going to de-pin the connectors and re-pin them like the pic I posted??

if you look at the description of each pin number, you'll see that the pins with the red x's through them are described as "not used"

Ok, so then I have to totally de-pin the connector and re-pin it to what the picture shows?

Yes, that is what you need to do. But I would do it one wire at a time so you don't get the colors/wires mixed up.

When you say not you used, does that mean you leave it empty?

I'm going to cheat alittle I've got both the 90 and 89 plugs and if you look at the pic the colors are the same on every plug just the placement is diff. I'm going to cut all the plugs out of each car and just match the colors and crimp them togerger. sure it will be a mess but its hidden and wont be seen.

Let me try not to confuse you. I have a 2000 civic si cluster in my 88std but the ENTIRE wiring harness in the car is from my old 90 civic si. The X's mean they aren't used when you swap in a Si cluster or a integra cluster. That information posted is correct because thats what I used to wire up my Si cluster.
Considering you are trying to swap between different years they X's are probably used. You can probably color code everything just about. I was actually surprised how the wires on the 00 Si cluster matched my 90 civic si wiring.

Wait so thats not the right diagram to go off of? ****! Or do I just match them up exactly how they look and just forget there is an X there?

Do you have a write up or pics on how you did this?

I like the Si instrument cluster and would like it in my EF, but I am concerned about fit and wiring. I have an electronic speed sensor so an electric speedo is no problem

You guys are making this harder than it really is. If you want to put a 90-91 cluster in an 88-89 car, repin your plugs to the pictures of the 90-91 cluster. If you want to put an 88-89 cluster in an 90-91 car, repin your plugs to the pictures of the 88-89 cluster.

Regarding the wires with the "x", if you notice, on both the 90-91 and 88-89 plugs, they both have an unused blue/yellow wire and a yellow/red wire.

Just finished doing this to an 88 dash harness. However, the 88 does not have the seat belt indicator lights so the wires are not in the same placement as the 88-89 diagram.

This was no problem though, as it was just a matter of matching colors. And when all was said and done, there were 2 leftover wires, a blue/yellow, and yellow/red.

I only had to lengthen 2 wires, the rest I just depinned and switched places. It took me a total of 20 mins to complete.

I got my 89 cluster in my 90 dash yesterday and it was easy. I also swaped the dash and all the interor. (last owner spray painted every thing white and it look like crap.)

thanks for the wiring diagram it made it so easy.

I have a problem with my gauge swap? The gas gauge only reads alittle over a 1/2 when the cars got a full tank and the RPM are off by about 2000rpm.

any idea what could cause this I checked all connections and every thing looks good.
I'm thinking it may be the cluster because I didn't take the one out of the 89 I had one that looked the same already. Maybe I'll just put the 89si one in and see if it works.

yes more than likely that cluster is messed up. Someone prolly took it apart and messed with the fuel gauge. That thing is super sensitive and if it is messed with than it wont be calibrated right and you will have the problem you are describing......
