Default Q/A 215/50/17 vs. 225/45/17

Was just thinking about this on my drive home. I know that the sidewall/outer diameter would be nearly the same (and when I say nearly I mean within 1 percent of each other). The 225 should give me the extra little grip I'm looking for because I feel like 215 is just a little short on tread width.

04 Honda Accord 4cyl
Stock tires 205/65/15.

PS. How do you calculate outer diameter?

I will take your word that the stock is 205/65-15 because there are many different 4 cylinder accords.

205/65-15 = stock
215/50-17 = 0.11% smaller than stock or 1/32" which is nothing, your tire will shrink much more due to wear.
225/45-17 = 2.04% smaller than stock or about 1/2" which is still doable.

There is no reason to go to 225 unless it is solely because the tire you want doesn't come in the 215 size. You will no "feel" the difference an extra 10mm will make in width. Also the rims you get may not be wide enough for that tire or you will get the "bulge" effect. Get better rubber, not wider rubber. Also I did start a thread trying to debunk the myth about wider tires being better. In dry weather you may see better traction if any. In snow or water you will get much less. Of course like I said, it's 10mm which is not much. I would just stick to 215/50-17. You will get much much better "feel" if you get better rubber.

The math:

let x=width in mm (ex: 225)
y=profile ration (ex: 45)
z=inner diameter in inches (ex: 16)

over all diameter in inches = 2*x*y/2540 + z

If you want an explanation of why that is just ask.

Cheers and I hope I answered all your questions, anymore please ask!

actually, your math was off because you did 16 instead of 17 hehe.

225/45/17 is actually .7 percent larger than stock, (25.6 as compared to 24.9 stock) which like you said isn't a huge difference and will more than likely shrink back down. I'm running 17x7.5 wheels so the tread width won't be an issue with bulging or stretching.

I'm running Yokohama AVS ES100, which nsxstasy has highly praised for their budget summer performance tire category, which I can firsthand account for. With the latest lowering, the cornering is great, high speed is still a little on the sketchy side, but then again I don't need to do high speed so go figure, but besides that I can turn on just about anything, in my big accord. Traction is good, but then again I'm haven't gone to the track yet (going next wednesday) and I'm not running a high HP application yet (I/H/E for the moment). There is a manual swap/head swap/turbo in my future but that is a minimum of a year away and by that point I will have gone through at least another set of tires. I think for the time being the Yoko's will fit my budget, and there is no need for me to get a better rubber, I was just thinking about the tread width.

Stock is actually 25.5" dia.
225/45-17 is 25.0"
215/50-17 is 25.5"

(25.5 - 25.0)/25.5 = 2% smaller than stock.

my math is correct.

The Yokos are a great bang for your buck tire. There are better tires out there but you will have to pay more for them.

I was just doing the math today in class, a 235/45/17 tire would work out great, outer diameter wise but would that fit onto a 17x7.5? 225/50/17 is borderline too large, so thats out. However, I'm still only 3,500 miles into this set of tires, so its just a brainstorm. Also, this would be 3 tread sizes wider than stock, would that cause any rubbing? 2004 Accord LX 4cyl sedan.

2x235x45/2540+17 = 25.32

235 is 30mm wider than stock. It may cause rubbing. Also a 235 usually fits on a 7.5-9" rim (some even need a min 8"). So if you put it on a 7.5" rim it will "bulge" out.

Most 215s have a maximum rim width of 7.5 so the tires will look "stretched"

Most 225s have 7.5" in the middle of their approved rim width.

That being said these number do change from tire to tire so make sure to check.
