If you work on cars you shouldn't have to ask,A socket knurled like that is the **** when you have oil or grease on your hands.

You start making sockets knurled like that with laser etched sizes like craftsman and you have a lifetime customer here.

The patent is in the works. They say I need a prototype and that is what I am working on. They may be acid etched as opposed to the laser etch, not sure.

Re: What do you guys think about knurled sockets? (backpurge)
To get a patent you do not actually need a working part. Complete drawings and paper work needs to be completed. Although most people already do this to there sockets. Just not to the extent in which you will be having the knurling. Just for this fact that other companies have done this they will throw the patent out. They do the knurling on only the spark plug sockets only. That is probably not convered in any patents or the person owning this patent is receiving royalties. They will most likely refer to this patent for any type of gripping surface on the outside of a socket. Not trying to burst your bubble just trying to hel you out before you invest a lot of time and money into this.

I wasn't talking about the socket he photoshoped. I know it is. The sockets I was commonly refering to was these. The spark plug socket.

As I said earlier the end of some sockets from snap-on, Matco, Mac, etc... are knurled, but not to the extent that he is saying to make. Most likely because it will infringe on a patent. When someone has applied for the patent in the past for having a knurled portion/gripping device on a socket they most commonly refer to patent number 5,606,897. This has come up before in the patent office and has been shot down due to this patent. I know most of you may say well that is for a oil filter socket, but he does include in his patent for having a knurled/gripping device on the outside of a socket.

Even some cheap-o sockets have them I've found...

Its a good idea, all sockets should have something to make them easier to hand tighten.
