help me pick my first (TIG) welder!
i'm pretty knowledgeable with the tungstens, filler, materials and such.. but im not sure what welder to buy.
i'm going to be welding mostly stainless (304) for making exhaust parts and aluminum for intercooler/intake parts. i may also be doing sheetmetal fab later on so i want something that i can learn on and use it later in my work.
i'm leaning torwards the Miller welders because most performance shops use it, but i also hear that Lincoln and Hobart are pretty good. but Miller is the most known (for a reason)
im not looking to spend $5k either, so a reasonably priced welder that can tackle AC/DC is what im in the market for.
any help is appreciated. -alan

Re: (ebydrc)
I would personally go with Miller. I have always used their stuff. If you are getting into some heavy duty stuff I would go with the Syncrowave 250 or 350. Doesn't really sound like you need that much uumppff!! I would probably go with a Dynasty - awesome little unit with great features.
I have used Miller stuff for about 4 years now and have a plasma cutter and TIG from them.
my $ 0.02

Figure out your max budget and then spend every penny of it on a USED Miller.
Best bang for your buck.
Yes get watercooled. It's fanfreakintastic!

sycrowave 180 or 250 i use the 180 for the same kind of work as you described and have never needed more than the 180 can put out. the fans have only kicked on once since we bought it and it was after welding 1/8" AL plate for a good while

go buy your self a harbor freight tig, I just got one paid 200 for the tig and 100 or so for the gas and other goodies. It a great welder to start out with.
