Backpurging and getting FULL penetration....can anyone give me some tips/help/advice??
I've been backpurging my mani's for some time now, but I still don't get the penetration I'd like to see. Generally I bevel and do a fusion pass, then a cap pass with filler, after which I'm surprised to see I don't end up with 100% or more penetration.
Should I try using filler on the root as well? I get nice full penetration on 16g tubing with no problem, but on these pipe el's I just can't seem to get it consistently. I'll see sporatic internal beads, but then I'll see that edge here and there.
Any advice or words that might help me out?

bend a piece of filler into a v and stick it inbetween your pipes to gap them and then tack in place, then remove the filler spacer and then weld. obviously you will need to use filler on your root pass but alteast you will be guaranteed to have full penetration just how she likes it.

Hmmm...yeah I've heard of people doing that. Should I bevel less then maybe? I dont' like to make my fill pass have to be wide, that tends to F me all up....haha.

Alright....I'm going for it I decided...gotta get some single pass action done. I have another mani I am making and I'm gonna give it a go because it's staying local, so if anything happens I can cover it.

yeah gap it like was stated already.
thats how i gap mine and you can "EASILY" get a beautiful weld on even Sch.40 and Sch.80.
Good Luck, should turn out just as pretty on the inside as the outside.

With a single pass correct? Do you still run like low 70's for amperage? I'll feel it out I suppose...just never thought to go for the one pass shot. That would save a HELL of alot of time though for sure.

Re: (RC000E)
you should do 2 pass'
sch.80 3 pass'
Play with the heat and filler, you might be able to squeak off 1 pass on sch.10

Yeah I gotcha...I thought you meant you do one pass on sch 40 and 80 and get full penetration. Yeah, I do mostly sch10, so I'm gonna try out single pass on the next one I start today.

I'll get pictures up, but I was able to pull off a single pass on sch10 with no problem at all. I weld fast, so I ran at ~100A with a 0.035" gap, using 1/16" filler and 3/32" tungsten
OH, and I flattened the bevels too.
