Interesting topic, can someone maybe make how-to post just so some of us can get a general idea of what is involved in doing something like this? i looked through the links and didnt find anything that mentions it.

To the OP, if you are serious about using these connectors i would definitely take your time to read and understand the product you want. It is very easy to order the wrong connector. The connectors alone are 20-50 dollars but the crimpers are $300-500 don't forget the turrets and positioners. As a manufacturing engineer i work with these products on a daily basis but not hands on(thats for the assembly workers to do)

D38999 is a very common Cylindrical connector(so disgard is part number)

example

PLUG
MS3101E44-52P

MS-MIL SPEC

3101- cable connecting PLUG

E-evirmental resisting(not really important)

44-52 -contact arrangement of pin/sockets(PAY ATTENTION TO INFO. THIS USES A SIZE 16 CONTACT AND HAS 104 CONTACTS)

P- pins

So now we can determine a part number for the plug .......

RECEPTACLE
MS3102E44-52S

NOTICE THIS PART NUMBER IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT

3102 -is the box mount RECEPTACLE end(note..we can also use 3100)

S- when u have pins on one end you need SOCKETS for the other

M22520/1-01 is the tooling for these contacs

M22520 is the "handle/body"

1-01- refers to the positioner thats related to the contact size (there are many different positioners that are interchangeable for the handle)

http://www.p-r-s.com/

They sell milspec connectors suitable for automotive wiring, as well as appropriate crimpers.

I'm surprised no one has posted up a link to prs yet.

I was looking for some information about the autosport connector line and came across this page:

http://www.deutsch.co.uk/html/...t.asp

If you sign up, you can download .pdf files for the different sub-series of autosport connectors. They'll tell you which crimping devices to use for each line, amperage ratings for different terminal sizes, pin layouts, product number legends, Different type of connector configurations (bulkhead, inline, pcb), etc..

Wow those autosport double density connectors would look sexy.
"Close to double density in contacts per single connector shell than standard Autosport connectors. "

You guys familiar with Mouser? They'll have damn near anything.

I've got a 2k page catalog sitting next to me now .

http://www.mouser.com if you goto their catalog section and use pages 1040 ~1047 is all AMP sockets/connectors. (circular)

Where would be a good resource to learn about using these connectors or automotive wiring in general. I want to learn and not burn something down before i do it and electrical wiring is something that i think scares a lot of people.

Where did everyone learn to do this?

Basic electrical theory..

What is being talked about is basically just the mimicking of the stock harness and just changing how it interfaces with the other wiring in the car.

I just recently got into this and god does it confuse the **** out of me.

I want so bad to figure it out, but can't...

What are the part numbers for the parts in this picture? Are sockets and pins included or not?

So much to know... I was just going to call the company on Monday but... if you can answer my questions, then it'd save the trouble.

You would have to go to the Deutsch website and download the appropriate .pdf file for that connector line to figure out specific part numbers/ordering information.

I was in touch with a U.S. distributor of the Deutsch Autosport connector line, just the other day. I requested a quote for a 61 pin size 20 connector set from them. The price was $320 ish (EACH!!). Of course that's for one of the largest sizes. I think the milspec Deutsch line is less expensive though.

Here's how the ordering sequencing works for the Autosport line:

I was planning on getting a quote for a comparable milspec line connector but haven't had a chance to download the milspec .pdf and figure it out as of yet.

Ahhh yes Deutch is some very very very nice stuff. It's the best I've ever seen/worked with for automotive connectors.

I'm getting ready to do my harness for my car... I'm going to do a mild wire tuck and wire up my EMS.

Couple of Q's....

Does the Raychem DR-25 shrink tubing bend and flex? or is it a lot like the crappier/cheaper stuff and not move once its been heated?

The reason I ask is...I saw one person who covered the entire wiring harness in it...and I saw another person who used the "chinese finger trap" wire sheath with just the DR-25 on the ends (as I've done before)

Was DR-25 intended to go the whole length of the wire? or just at the ends?

hey eric, adam covered my whole harness with dr-25, my ground straps are even covered with dr-25. if you need to make like a 90* turn, then just get a 90* sleeve for that area, but to answer your question, the raychem is flexible. at the ends adam put on a piece of glue shrink just to keep the raychem from sliding around. same with the ground straps, he put a piece of glue shrink over the raychem and the beginning of the terminals after soldering them together.

Page 20 of the PRS catalog lists Raychem DR-25 as "Typically used for wire loom covering."

IMO, it's kind of overkill to wrap the whole harness in heatshrink. The plastic braiding would be more than enough to protect the wiring inside. If you really want to do overkill, do the heatshrink and then cover it with the braiding to make it look "pretty". That's probably what I'd do to be honest...

hey eric, heres a picture of what adam did, you can see the short lengths of glue shrink that cover the ends of the dr-25.
