I bought a 95 gsr that had a little front end damage and was not running from a buddy of mine. Long story short he had the tranny rebuilt while the car was out of commission, and had never tested it before I bought it. I had the tranny in the car, and tested it. Well the only gears it would go into were 3rd and 4th, and 2nd if you slammed it. I pulled the trans and cracked it open last night. I'm no tranny expert by any means, but I have done a lot of research about how the gears, forks should look and everything seems good. When I shift the tranny the shift selector (I think that's what it's called, correct me if I'm wrong please) it hits the 3rd and 4th forks fine, but it seems like it is almost bent and doesn't line up with any others. I'm trying to get someone to let me borrow a shift selector locally to see if this is the problem. Remember that this car was wrecked and this is the same tranny in the new case, should I be looking at something else, or does anyone believe this is the actual problem? Any help from you tranny guru's would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

try and take the shift selector aka selector or changer mechanism out as well as the forks. basically pull each sleeve up and down from gear to gear by hand. if all the sleeves move fine, then the prob would most likely be the mechanism. if you experience any binding or resistance, then your problem is the sleeve and/or hub.

and if you could while the mechanism is out (keep it assembled), take a pic facing the tabs that move the shift forks and take one more shot directly above these tabs. then post the pics. you have to know where to look because a lot of the mechanism is made of bent metal. if you can't post any pics...the tabs on the sides for 1/2 and 5/R fork are what you should be concerned with bending as they should look like an identical mirrored image. so look and compare them and see if one is bent up more than the other one.

Thanks for the help man. I can manually move the shift forks up and down for all the gears. I don't have any pics of it right now but I will try and get some, when I try and change gears the selector tries to push up/down on two of them at once, and doesn't line up at all. I'm pretty sure this is my problem and someone is supposed to let me use one so I'll keep you posted if it works or not.

yeah but if you are trying to fiddle with shifting the mechanism bolted in while the gearhousing is off is not a good idea. the forks and mechanism's rod won't be precisely aligned and the stuff just flops around. not a good way to try and simulate correct shift feel through the shift extension rod? is that how your shifting? and to add to that, the detent ball and springs are out as well etc etc.

I understand that the casing is not holding the shift forks in when it's not on, but when I shift with the extension rod when it's off it feels the same way as when it's on, leading me to believe that this is actually the problem.

my point is you just can't shift it correctly from the ext rod with the gearhousing off.

I understand that, but even when I move the extension rod from side to side like it's in neutral and the shift forks are in place, it doesn't line up and does the same thing with the case on or off. I know I can't test a tranny with the casing off, but in this case it doesn't matter. I apologize if I'm confusing you and I'm not contradicting what your saying this situation is different though.

bump..having the same problem, but mine is broke...will one from any other b series trans work?
and also my case is is bad condition so would a ls case work?

seen that crack several times...yes any b series will work. and yes you can use that ls case.
