Auto trans goes neutral

Auto trans goes neutral
My 97 Civic transmission appears to shift to to drive but acts like it is in neutral. Checked the fluid and it is pink and no smell. after sitting about 5 - 10 minutes and restarting it works again but after about a block it acts like it is in neutral in all posotions but Park. Did it three times until I was close enough to home to park it and walk the rest of the way. What could be wrong? It has a lot of miles and spews water out the back of the engine and the CV joints clack badly, but the trans. has not been a problem at all until now.

called "neurtalizing"
Normally enough of the clutch material has failed that the filter is clogged and therefore nothing to pump. Because the filter is not serviceable, the trans has to come out and be rebuilt. Also plan on replacing the radiator as the trans cooler section of it will be loaded with debris and it is easier to replace than try to clean it out.

Common problem, the filter element is too small to accept "normal" clutch material. A rebuild kit will include an updated filter assembly that is larger than OE to help prevent pump starvation. Also inspect the 4th clutch drum, it is prone to cracking.
