98 Integra GSR stuck not typical 5th gear issue
I have searched around and have seen other 5th gear issues but this one is a bit different,
98 Integra GSR 100% stock trans as far as i know.
while driving in 2nd or 3rd the trans locked into 5th gear, locking the wheels in the process. now the transmission is stuck in 5th gear no matter where you have the shifter, R-N-1-2-3-4 but it will NOT let you put the shifter into the 5th gear position if you put it into any gear it is locked into that gear and 5th both locking the transmission. the car will roll as long as someone holds the clutch in and will attempt to pull out in 5th as long as you have the shifter in the N position.
I already gather that i will most likely have to go into the transmission but just wondering what i could expect to find, or if there is any chance it could be in the linkage.

looking at a diagram it looks like the shifter is attached to the reverse shift fork, then attached to to the 5th fork via a roll pin. I am thinking that the pin may have sheared, thus allowing it to go into any gear including reverse but will not go into 5th.

Might be a broken fork or it might have run low on fluid to the point where gears started welding themselves to the mainshaft. I've seen both. In the case of the latter it will generally start popping out of 5th gear first though.

it never popped out of any gear, was driving through a small town at about 35mph or so and the front wheels just completely locked, it was a bit of a rough road where it happened, was able to pull the shiftier into the neutral position and get it home in 5th, which made for an interesting ride. but it has been locked in 5th ever since. I'm going to go pull the drain plug in a minute and see what comes out, we have had it for a while and a friend owned it before us. never saw any signs of a leak, but the idiot wanna be mechanics that had it before him did some really stupid stuff with it so who knows.

yeah, My opinion it has a lot of miles on it with no oil. there were never any signs at all of a leak, and the engine bay, engine, trans and under this car is very clean, looks damn near new for a car 17 years old, so i have a hard time believing it leaked out without me noticing. my opinion the idiots who though they rebuilt the engine, (160,000miles and didn't bother to have it bored and jacked the compression to around 13.5:1 but that is a whole nother post) never filled the trans back up.

I didn't pay them to rebuild it or anything like that, the friend i got it from bought it off the guys who did. it's already had to have a timing belt, water pump, tensioner kit and head gasket put in it and now the trans is locked less than 10,000 miles after the rebuild. and it needs rebuilt now, the cylinders are ovaled so when the trans comes out it will probably get torn down for a proper rebuild.
