Default 1996 Accord LX sedan manual transmission noise

I bought this car last july and its always made a "rrrrrrrrrrrr" type of noise. I dunno why i bought it making noises, guess i made a mistake. but anyways. a mechanic put it on a lift, spun my front tires by hand and told me it isn't the wheel bearings.

I got a noise that sounds similiar to a single engine propeller airplane. "rrrrrrrr". the pitch goes up as the car goes faster. i can hear pretty good going faster than 20mph. doesn't matter if i push the clutch in or put the gearshift in neutral, it always does it. doesn't matter if i'm turning or going straight, it still does it. it used to also have a high pitched whine once i go beyond 60mph, but since i added mtf fluid, that went away. shifts ok, clutch is ok. drives ok, but this noise is loud and i'm worried about it had to put new tires on it, ball joints, and get an alignment, so it isn't a tire roaring noise. its not a "wum wum wum" type of roar.

i noticed on the lift that it is leaking tranny fluid where the passenger side axle meets the tranny/engine. guy before me had the axle replaced. its a slow leak. i've only put a couple thousand miles on it since i got it. i drained the old fluid out and put in honda mtf fluid i got from the dealer. only about 1-1.5 quarts of fluid came out when i drained. i couldn't find any perfectly level ground. i got about 2.4 quarts of new mtf fluid in there. still makes the noise. sounds a little bit different. shifts slightly better.

i realize now that being low on fluid isn't the only problem. starting to suspect it could be a differential bearing, or one of those "shafts". I don't really know anything about trannies, I've just been googling lately.

i'm pretty sure the mechanic shook the axle and said there was no play in it, but honestly i don't remember.

i plan on taking it to a tranny shop this week. guy says over the phone that it could be a bushing in there, and he'll probably have to take the axle off to figure out whats up.

i was just wondering if anybody out there had any idea what could be wrong and roughly how much it would cost.

so i took it to the tranny shop and the guy said it isn't loud enough for him to figure out if its a wheel bearing, or the transmission. told me to keep driving it and wait for it to get louder.

he said there was some play in my axle but it wasn't that bad. said that alot of them have a small amount of play.

i filled it up with mtf. got rid of the faint high pitched whine. but the "rrrrrr" is still there.

the guy drove it on the highway. and when he swerved right, it just barely sounds louder. but its almost undetectable.

couple nights ago i drove the car and it made a high pitched "swish swish swish" metallic type of noise. it was pretty loud. made me wonder if i was going to make it to the store. it was coming from the driver's side front. tranny is on the other side of the car. it went away completely after about a half mile of driving. just suddenly stopped and went back to the usual "rrrrrrrrrr" type of noise. sounds like using a mill bastard file to sharpen a machete or an axe. closest thing i can think of. or maybe sharpening a kitchen knife before you carve up a turkey. sound like thin pieces of metal rubbing against each other. noise got faster with increased wheel spin, but the pitch stayed the same. it definitely coming from around my tire area.

is this what a wheel bearing sounds like? i know they make a roaring noise, but can they make a "swish-swish-swish" type of noise as well?

So I know this is old but...

Obviously this metal to metal scraping noise was a worn brake pad / rotor
