Default OEM Muffler Hack: How to make a poor man's flowmaster Write Up

Out of complete boredom and lack of funds, I decided to "upgrade" my exhaust system using the OEM muffler for stealth and for cost. I purchased a used 98 civic muffler from a dismantler on Alpha street in Irwindale (Amazing source for parts!!!)
and hacked it up.

Step 1: The Victim, $25 from a dismantler

Step 2: The cut off tool I bought from Harbor Freight $9.99

Step 3: The Heatshield removed

Step 4: Honda's muffling

Step 5: Gutted

Step 6: Weld the cover back on (no pics)

This took longer than I thought because the muffler case is very thin and hard to weld even on the lower settings, the torch likes to burn through instead of weld. I left the muffler empty but I would have rather ran a drilled straight pipe through it with some sort of muffler packing. Anyhow, it sounds pretty much like a flowmaster sounds like on a Honda. It does have the G35 sound on deceleration. It probly only added .5-2 hp but it killed some time. Let me know what ya'll think.

no pics of the final product my camera died, but it looks just like the last picture with the cover welded on. I would have rather ran a straight pipe through it with some kind of muffler packing but I didn't have any of these materials. The main reason I did all this was to see what the OEM muffler looked like inside.

you should have put a deflector in there to cancel some of the noise out, but oh well, no worries. as long as you like it.
