Default My car eats 5-30 Mobil synthetic oil like I eat Burgers. Bad rings? Valves? Dunno? What oil to chang

Hi,

I have a 2000 civic Cx mostly stock. I have been using Mobil 5-30 synthetic for the longest but my car eats too much.

My valves and or rings could be very worn Im sure.

Should I change the Viscosity or change the oil I use entirely? Stay synthetic or go back to regular Castrol GT??

Please dont post if your not sure

Thanx in Advance.

switch to 10-30 and find some motor honey,
super thick oil aditive stp or what ever.
if it still smokes probably the valve guides.
good luck.

Well no matter what oil you use it will still burn oil. You should get it fixed it might just be your valve seals. If you see blue smoke coming out while accelerating from a stand still then its most likely your valve seals, if its blowing blue smoke while your driving that its most likely your rings. I just have one question for you, did your engine start to burn oil after you started using synthethic oil????? Cuz, when I first swapped in my b16a 4 years ago, the first year and a half I used regular motor oil and I didn;t burn anything. Then I started using royal purple synthetic oil and I started burning 1 qt every 1-1.5k miles. I tried going back to regular motor oil but it still burned it. I had a bad valve seal, but I got lazy and didn't fix it, took a sharp turn one night, oil light came on and then BAM spun bearing. My No. 1 cyl intake valve had burned/wet oil all around the valve when i disessembled the motor.

My car eats oil but doesn't smoke bad and doesnt seem to be blue from what I can tell.

When I first started using the synthetic oil it wasn't that bad, but it seems to get a little worse as time goes on. Also the oil gets dirty looking fairly fast. I do drive in high RPMs though.

So in your opinion if I go 10-30 should I still use synthetic?? but again it doesn't smoke "bad".

My car does sputter a lil bit too, and im throwing misfire codes in all cylinders and P1399 the mysterious dealer code.

Thanx for input fellas.

B engines have a rep for going through Mobil1 like it does gas. Had a friend pull apart his B18C because it smoked so bad, just to find out what was causing it. Valve seals were good, guides good, the oil control rings on all 4 pistons froze from oil coking, and allowed an obvious path for oil to the chamber.

Adding a little bit of ATF to your engine oil will help break up sludge/varnish/coking. People say this is stupid, but it will do wonders in removing deposits from the engine.

I don't know much about oil control rings but I will start researching. I bet I've cooked some oil in my rice cooker oil rings. That could be my problem. Yeah thats true about it going through it like gas and at $6 or more a quart I'm thinking F~this shizz.

About the ATF I heard this is a good thing too, but also should be noted to run it in your car before the oil change, then do not put more when you add clean oil.
I have never done this though.

I have 150,000 miles on my car and wonder if the rings are bad. I heard Honda's arnt even broken in yet at that mileage. Not sure if thats true. One thing though I have had a heavy foot most of my cars life, but also always used Mobil 1 syn.

And then theres my cel codes lately. Dont now where to go on that. please see this other senerio.

Thanx all I appreciate all your sugestions.

it should be noted that you should empty ~2qts of oil and refill with ATF, let the engine idle for 10-15 minutes, then change the oil.

dont drive around with ATF in the crankcase...thats asking for a world of hurt.

edit: didnt read the post above mine before I posted

You should do a compresion test and a leakdown test.
To see if it's valve guides or rings.

compression and leak down tests only tell you if the cylinder is sealed (IE:rings, burned valve)
neither test will show bad valve guide seals...

Block has 150,000 give or take because of wrong size wheels.

and yes it idles like crap but not always. Plus im showing misfire codes on all cylinders right know. See above for link on that.

I need to try the leak down test but I have little experience with that.

Thanx for reply's

The was a bump for your post and to watch the topic. I would like to see the answers to the problem.

ps. You are entitled to your opinion but ... Being a Raiders, Chargers, Browns, Cowboys etc. fan has nothing to do with the website. But, on that note...you want to say that the Raiders suck. Maybe at this time they may not be doing so hot but, how many championships does your Chargers team possess.

It's cool Bro,

I'm just messing with you. Yeah at least you can talk about some good things in the Raider's past. But you know we own the Raider's for now LOL. Just cuz this is a Honda site doesn't mean we can't josh around a little bit.

Hopefully I can say we have a Championship after this season.

May the best team win!!!

Your cool man at least you didn't cuss me out!! ha ha
