Default Idle problems

I have a b16 eg4 but currently once started the revs hit around 2000 until warm. Once warm it idles at around 500, which I thought was rather low. if I stop the car and start it again 2 minutes later the revs drop and the car stalls straight away. Anyone able to help me with what this could be ?
Thanks
Kyle

Check if your IACV still works. If it does, it may be dirty. Remove it, clean it, reinstall it, and check for any improvement. It is located on the back side of your intake manifold. It should have a 2-pin connector on it, along with 2 small coolant lines.

To test if it works, remove the IACV and jump the 2 terminals in short bursts with 12 volts and make sure the solenoid actuates freely. Clean out any gunk in it and it wouldn't hurt to give it a quick shot of WD40 to help free things up.

You will probably leak a little bit of coolant when removing it so have a drain pan ready and be sure to top-off your coolant after reinstallation.

A dirty throttle body can also contribute to idle issues. If you decide to remove your throttle body for cleaning, be sure to have a new gasket ready because they usually break during removal.

I believe OBD1 B16 motors have a Fast Idle Thermal Valve (FITV). This is the reason why your idle is 2000rpm when your motor is cold. Maybe someone can chime in on whether 2000 rpm is the normal engine speed for a cold start.

Clean out these components and you should have a nicer, smoother idle. If it does not solve your issue, let us know and we can troubleshoot further.

I hope I helped!

i have a similar issue. when cold it idles around 1800 then drops to around 900. idles great when i put it clutch and am moving but when the car comes to a complete stop it drops to about 400. this seem to gradually get lower and lower. i just bought the car and was droping really low when i stopped and was stalling. i adjusted the idle screw to bring idle up to 900 and was working fine for a few days, it didnt really drop below that. is it possible that the idle adjustment screw loosened a little. but when the car is moving and clutch is in it stays between 800-1100 (mostly at 900). the drop only occurs when the car comes to a complete stop.

Number one cause of this issue is a lazy oxygen sensor. I would start there.

Then fix your base idle that you messed up.
