Clunking noise from tranny after clutch replacement
So I just replaced the stock clutch on a b16 tranny with a Clutchmasters Stage 3 and now it makes a clunking noise anytime the car is in gear/clutch engaged. If I put the car in neutral or depress the clutch pedal while in gear, the clunking noise goes away. As you go faster, the clunking noise becomes a fast clicking noise, almost like a ticking clock. The flywheel was resurfaced and the throwout bearing was replaced prior to installing the clutch.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Clunking noise from tranny after clutch replacement (eg_b18c)
I'm looking through the archives and people are saying that the only time the pilot bearing is turning is when the clutch is disengaged. When I disengage the clutch, the noise goes away. I only get the noise when the clutch is engaged and in gear...

Throw-out bearing? Tranny shaft bearing? Disengage the clutch (press down the pedal) very quickly. Does the noise stop instantly (T-O-bearing)? Or does it take a second or 2 to coast to a stop (tranny bearing)?

Re: Clunking noise from tranny after clutch replacement (JimBlake)
Yes, if I disengage the clutch very quicky, the noise stops instantly. I can be in 2nd gear, where I've gained some speed and it's clunking away and as soon as I put the car in neutral or disengage the clutch, the noise will stop right there and the car will be rolling with no noise whatsoever. Put the car back in gear or engage the clutch and the noise comes back.
FYI: I installed the new throw-out bearing that came with the clutch kit and greased it down pretty well when installing it...
Thanks again for your help.

Does it make the noise when stopped, idling in neutral with the clutch engaged (pedal NOT pressed down)?
Does it make the noise coasting along in neutral with the clutch engaged?

Re: Clunking noise from tranny after clutch replacement (JimBlake)
When stopped, idling in neutral with the clutch engaged, it does not make the noise.
Also, it does not make the noise when coasting in neutral with the clutch engaged.
Basically it will not make the noise at all in neutral (clutch engaged or not) nor will it make the noise at all if the clutch is disengaged (pedal pressed down) and in gear.

That doesn't really fit either T-O bearing or tranny shaft bearing. Maybe it only happens when there's a load on the driveline?
Any way you can make the noise with the car stopped? So you can pinpoint it's location? (Like maybe supported so the front wheels are in the air spinning?)
Some kind of wind-up or backlash in the drivetrain? What happens when you turn off the engine, put it in gear, NO parking brake, & rock the car back & forth. Excessive looseness or klunking?

Yup, I'm testing this with car jacked up so the front wheels are spinning as I'm testing this through the gears. I actually haven't tested the car yet with the wheels on and driving on the road. I just bought a stethoscope to see if I can pinpoint the exact location.
I'll also try putting the wheels on and rock the car while in gear. Good idea. Thanks!

Does the clunk increase frequency with engine speed or wheel speed?
Does it stop when its in gear but you let off the throttle (engine braking?

Yes, the frequency of the clunking increases with engine speed.
No, it does not stop while its in gear and letting off the throttle.

Well its definitley on the mainshaft/input side then. Did you open the tranny at all for anything? Are you sure you torqued the PP down correctly?

Nope, I didn't open the tranny at all. Just pulled the tranny off to install the clutch.
Yes, I don't remember the exact number, but I torqued the PP down per the Helms manual.
