Aligning motor to put timing belt back on?
96 Teg Ls
About 6-7 teeth on the timing belt got shredded off , this happened when the motor was just started for about 2-3 seconds and died, So how do we know at which point the crank shaft pulley is at tdc piston #1 to put the new belt on?
and also how do we set it back to normal without having any piston valve contact....?
All help is appreciated...............
Edit or does it even matter? if piston #1 is all the way to the top can the cams be set so the dizzy is firing in the #1 cylinder?

Yea but how will I tell if cylinder #1 or #4 should be firing?

turn the cam pulleys to the "up" position, they should be marked.take out the #1 cylinder spark plug, put something long in there so it touches the piston, and turn the crank until the piston reaches its highest point

As long as pistons 1 and 4 are all the way up, it doesnt matter. Yuo determine the firing order by the dist. and of course having the camshafts properly aligned.
There is a dash mark/line on your lower timing cover. Rotate your crank until the white mark on the crank pulley lines up with that mark. At this point your done with the block. Make sure both cams are aligned properly with the words "up" facing up (if theyre stock gears) and the dashes on the gears themselves pointing at each other.
Have the tensioner a little loose and slip the belt on. After its on, rotate the motor by hand 3 teeth (in the direction it travels while its running) and then tighten the tensioner.
