Quick ?... My 2.5 down pipe off my bseries turbo is very close, like 1/4" from the oil pan. It doesn't touch though.

I do want to heat wrap and possibly a heat shield but should I bother? I have it installed I like the good clearance

Just wrap it if you are too cheap to modify it for proper clearance from the oil pan.

Lol it's prob cheaper to make it lower. But I'm wondering if the pan reflects heat enough to be ok? Normally there's a hot cat converter right there anyway

The catalytic converters on obd1 and early obd2 vehicles are much further back than the oil pan, at the rear end of the sub-frame. Oil pans are steel, they CAN absorb radiant heat. It is not as significant while the vehicle is moving and cool air is rushing by, but more when sitting still, idling in traffic. In "extreme" cases, overheating the oil. Never physically seen this, but the theory is there.

I usually keep atleast 1"-1.5" of clearance from the oil pan. Worst case scenario, you wrap the DP and apply reflective tape to the bottom of the oil pan.

If it were my own vehicle, I would modify the downpipe.

1/4" is too tight for my liking as well. BUT get some quality wrap and reflective tape/shielding and it will be fine.

Wrapping my downpipe probably netted me a few degree decrease in normal driving temps. Also noticed the oil take a little bit longer to get up to temp.

ah my downpipe is pretty much touching on my y8. Been running for a yr without problems of overheating oil. But also i have stainless steel piping and it drops the heat fast.

And i would have to say no tothe wraping because if the wrap gets oil in it from an oil leak. It will burn and can catch fire.

I'm not allowed to have oil leaks lol it's my own rule.

I noticed its actually the fat *** flex that's the clearance issue the stainless pipe is clear... The metal flex part bulges out 1/2" maybe. And prob doesn't get super hot.

I'm leaving it for now I may tape the pan tho. I can't be bothered till its tuned and ready for fine tweaks like this

If it is the flex pipe then that is even less to worry about. Use a temp gun, you will see the difference.

i just weld it all together, the pipe to the pan, the pan to the block. that way i don't have to guess about heat transfer. I know what i got!

most early honda stuff has the pipe practically on the pan wasn't an issue, but i have wondered myself, have the down pipe and header ceramic coated is your best option, that will lower your under hood temp, reduce oil pan temp transfer, and heap the heat where it belongs

edit didnt see turbo, i would just have the downpipe coated

On a serious note,you can get that downpipe jet hot coated inside and out, for one pipe its. Not crazy expensive, that would make a serious difference in heat transfer

OP you will be fine, the outside of the flex pipe is just a sheeth covering the actual flex pipe that's on the inside. It won't get hot enough to cause any issues. In fact, I like to run the downpipes I make tucked up nicely along the oil pan, since everyone's gotta be stanced now-a-days.

Ill check the heat gun on it just for *****. Wrap it later as long as that's not any fire risk.

The modification made the exhaust move a bit and muffler need shortened to tuck properly. I hate exhaust work. It's also a bit stiff under the car where normally it's a bit loose and can move an inch or more back an fourth. Spring is here the testing begins

The oil pan, since it is steel, will absorb the heat from the downpipe, this means it also heats the oil in the pan.. while this may help the oil get to temp faster, during aggressive driving the downpipe will cause the oil to heat beyond its service limit, I.e start prematurely degrading

Wrap the downpipe completely and you'll avoid this, you'll also notice a drop in under hood temps as well
