I just picked up a 96 civic for cheap. It starts and runs (idle goes up and down a little) but when you press the gas pedal it stalls. If you let up it will fire again and resume idling. If you keep it pressed it will eventually die. However if you just slowly push the pedal down it will actually rev up. I cant figure out where to go with this. My first time working on a honda or any foreign car. I know the car has the 1.6l and it has an aftermarket intake manifold and header(which i guess eliminated the cat) and downpipe. I replaced the 02 sensor on the downpipe because the wires had been cut then spliced back together. I noticed it when i looked at the car and i figured that was surely the problem and thought i could pick the car up cheap and fix it cheap! But its still doing it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks

Check engine light?? I would start with checking the tps sensor for damage or being adjusted out of spec.

possibly the fuel pump. that's what would happen to mine when it went out. at least you got it for cheap - fix it and she's good!

I was thinking the tps too. but how do you test/adjust that? It really dosent seem like the fuel pump but im gonna put a pressure tester on it today to be sure. I havent done anything else, I just got the car a couple of days ago. I know this is something simple and when i get it fixed I either got a good mpg car for going to and from work or I can sell it and turn a quick profit. The car is in pretty good shape.

Thank you Nickeg9Ej1! The link you posted lead me straight to the problem. The MAP and TPS connectors were switched. I swapped them back to the correct plug and reset the computer and it runs correctly now. Thank you so much!
