Default 98 civic ex - Vtec solenoid leaking oil

My civic is leaking oil from the top of the head. I clean it off with some break cleaner and check it a day later and it looks like it's coming from the Vtec solenoid. How would I fix this problem? Oil is all over form the back of my value cover and to the side of the transmission. any suggestion? Thanks for your time.

If it is leaking from between the solenoid and the head, there is a good chance the gasket is bad. The solenoid also
has a top an bottom with another gasket in between that can also leak. Pics for reference:

Also, with these engines, when there is a lot of oil leaking from that side of the head it's a good idea to replace all the seals IMO.

-valve cover gasket & bolt seals
-cam end plug (DOHC)
-distributor O ring
-VTEC solenoid gaskets

If it's from the VTEC solenoid then replace the gasket.

Make sure it's not the distributor o-ring or (another seal that is the same part number as the distributor o-ring and right next to it, but for some reason the name is escaping me at the moment...). Part number is 30110-PA1-732

Okay thanks for the reply guys!

For some reason I can't seem to fine the top an bottom gasket in the market, shown on the second picture. Beside Honda dealer.

I was able to fine the Spool Valve Filter online. Any suggestion?

This post helped confirm my leak. cheers on me. I confirmed after doing doing head gasket, it was a bad one. It leaks down on top of tranny & goes to front & back then splitting to 3-4 paths each. Causing smoke from under hood. It may have been the culprit the whole time. Either way, I needed to do head gasket for overheating. 2 birds... Hear are the pix part #s & gaskets.

I had the same issue recently and it's damn frustrating. I changed both VTEC gasket and distributor O-ring with no results (still leaked). I poured in a bottle of ATP AT-205 Re-Sealer a week ago and not a drop of oil has leaked since. Whether it works long term remains to be seen. As BryanM. said "Also, with these engines, when there is a lot of oil leaking from that side of the head it's a good idea to replace all the seals IMO" I think that is where my leak was coming from (head gasket), as the car idles more consistently now than it did before I used the re-sealer.

I will most likely need to replace the head gasket in the future but, I am in no hurry to do that until the re-sealer stops working.

" Re: oil leak from head gasket (THE PLAYER)
You CAN leak oil from the head gasket without leaking coolant or having a shitty running motor.

with the head off of the block, I am sure yuo have seen the oil runners where oil that lubricated the head falls back down to the pan. Well this oil "waterfalls" over every surface of the inside of the motor.

The blowby created in the motor creates pulses of pressure that push this hot oil (which already has a strong capilary tendency to follow cracks and creveses) gets pushed out past the gasket.

Like I mentioned before. I had the same problem. Oil stains above the engine code. There was no dirtly oil streams coming from the cam cap, solonoid, or distributor, which got brand new gaskets during the rebuild, and the brand new OEM cam cap was bathed in hondabond before inserting.

I took the hose from the valve cover to the intake arm (which was attached as stock) and just vented it to the atmosphere.

Oil leak above engine code is COMPLETELY gone now".

Mine leaked from one spot on engine but showed two locations on the ground. Both (ground) spots were firewall side and towards the back and middle of engine. It was leaking just behind the VTEC solenoid, streamed along upper block/lower head towards middle of engine and to the ground. Other streamed about 3" in front of the rear main seal and then to ground. After I dumped in a bottle of ATP AT-205 re-sealer I have no leaks at all (so far).

Telecaster, How did you ever make out with that ATP AT-205 re-resealer. I think I might have a bad rear main seal. It doesn't leak to bad about 2 quarts per 5k miles. I'm just going through the process of elimination right now. I just replaced the valve cover gasket, vetch solenoid gasket. I am going to fix the Distributor o ring, and the intake manifold gasket this weekend.

Any feedback would be appreciated.
