Default Reset check engine light

If you fix an issue that is causing your Check Engine Light to come on, will it reset automatically once the system has detected that its fixed?

Or does it need to be manually reset?

You have to do it manually. You can reset it by unhooking the negative terminal on your battery for a minute.

One thing to note: if you use the negative terminal off the battery you may have to put the radio security code in, so make sure you have this handy before removing the battery terminal.
Alternatively if you have a more modern car that is OBD2, you can borrow a code reader and reset the ECU with the code reader.

Or you can pull the radio/backup fuse for 10 secs.

if pulling the fuse or disconneting the battery doesnt do it, like GlassJaw said use a code reader to clear it or just go to the closest parts store and theyll do it no charge
