Default replace ISB or get new trans

hey guys i have a 99 ls tranny that has a bad ISB. now i bought all the parts for it to be done and my friend is only charge me like 25 an hour for labor, but my question is should i just drive on this trans until i have enough money to get a newer one or just replace the ISB. the reason i ask is bc i know if u do not replace the ISB right away, it can mess up other parts of the tranny. by the way i have been driving it on a bad ISB for about 3,000 miles, if that helps. any input would be great

Just replace the ISB, especially if you have a hookup for labour, although i'm not sure what kind of friend charges you $25/h.

well its actually my friends neighbor but hes a pretty cool guy. and id rather pay 25 instead of around 75-90 for a shop to do it. about how many hours do u think that job would take (the tranny is still in the car)... 8-10 hours?

do it yourself. b-series trannies are easy. just have a tube of hondabond, sockets and c-clip pliers, some brake parts cleaner (i recommend the wearever brand from advance) handy. and pay lots of attention to be careful and to line everything up. especially the little washer on top that its into the slot in the top case. also, when setting the tranny down to open up the case, notice that the input shaft sticks out slightly past the case. so set the case on a couple 2x4s that are 18" long or somethin. its really pretty simple if you're mechanically inclined. good luck if you give it a try

Possibly, theres no way to tell without pulling the tranny and opening the case though, the longer you leave it though the greater the chances something else will get damaged.

the ISB can get pretty bad before something else messes up. i certainly wouldn't consider it trash, but i'd be quick to yank it apart and toss in a new ISB. you don't even have to shim anything! it's the easiest thing you'll ever do inside a transmission, and the easiest one to work on to boot

The ISB is about $20 from Honda, if you pay to get the labor done just do the math there.

mine has been bad now since i bought the car, and i've tacked about 30,000 km's on it since then, it hasnt gotten any worse, however i didnt realise it was the ISB untill a few days ago and i will have mine replaced next weekend, dont waste your money on a new tranny, just replace the bearing and your good to go.
