Default Poor Man's R - H2B build

Yeah yeah. First off this is a head from the factory. It was never installed on a production type r. It was manufactured in 2002.

This is mainly a thread for me to come back to and to hopefully clear up some things once it hits the archives. The first string of pictures will be the setup of the engine. Where all things start.
Some things I will not have pictures of due to having to go to my work and sneek into the shop late at night to use heavier tools and a better parts washer.

First off, the king of the garage:

Operation green light (go)

Still dirty, in process of spring cleaning the garage but at least I have room for the engine stand and a cherry picker inside my garage.

The block:

The dirt: will be painting aluminum color after cleaning

Mating surface and pistons about to go bye-bye

Back of block will be missing "black box" for a catch can, plus I am going to either fit a B16/C5 water pipe to null all the damn coolant lines the GSR has.

This is all I have right now. I have managed to shave down the A/C bracket to look more like a mount and not a a/c bracket. Looks nice but will repaint flat black or aluminum to blend in. I will be cleaing this block first before tearing apart to hopefully stay a little cleaner. More pics to come.
edit 4-4
Got the block cleaned and stripped, debating selling and getting an H-motor. But will continue with build until then.

Should have showed pic of the outside of block where I cleaned it. Looks hella better. for engine brite, gas, carb cleaner and wire brushes. Looks good though.
/edit.
Just got all my bearing codes down and will do some measuring before my P30 pistons/rings get here so I can get them put on my rods. (thanks steve at HMO)
Mains:
1. Green 2. Brown 3. Green 4. Green 5. Yellow
Rods:
1. Black 2. Brown 3. Brown 4. Brown

Trying to get a close 12:1 compression ratio.

I am also going supertech flat faced black nitride valves and hopefully supertech springs. I want chromoly retainers but might go to ti or aluminum.
Stress relief and shot peen gsr rods if I can find a reliable source.
Head will be stock type R with upgraded valvetrain and I might go S2S2 or Pro 1/2 cams.
Y21 tranny but I need to inspect some syncros/dog teeth/gears. hhmmmmm.
Tuning will be on crome pro with IBM T30 labtop. Thanks John and also moates for all the cool toys.

Got all my bearing clearances to 0.0015 on mains +/- 0.0001 so good to go.
Rod bearings came out equally well.
P30's went on without a snag for a whopping 11.74 machine shop bill.

Ring gaps on uppers were 0.017 +/- 0.002 I am happy.
Bottoms were 0.022 +/- 0.002 again happy.

Block is done got the hootus apparatus done for my catch can fitting using spare parts = free.

Plan on getting the other one done same way. Drill, tap, insert and done.

Sending head off to Combustion Chamber.
Haven't gotten cams yet - still undecided as well.

Thats all for now?

Just to keep the pictures flowing I am adding them here instead of a new post. Plus I am not looking for attention so I will not bump this unnecessarily.

But here is pictures of the block all painted up and assembled waiting a head which will get sent out monday to Combustion Chamber for some workage.

Here is my head stripped down. I have to take before pictures yet so I can post up before and after pictures of the work.

Thats all for now.

I wouldn't recommend doing the other side the same way. I've had two different motors that would spew oil out of the driver's side "breather" port. Now, I don't have any on the bottom of the block, I only have two on the valve cover. friendly advice, take it or leave it.

I will def. take it for time being and remember it for future reference. I have two ports for the catch can but the upper smaller pipe is too small IMO for a solo breather port on the block.

I have a pretty red valve cover that I have no intentions of cutting right now or in near future. But will use stock port to catch can as well for now.

For allmotor that should be enough evacuation of pressure and it eliminates the insufficient PCV valve of the oem set-up. Plus no oil in the Intake manifold = in my book.

Ok. I got the block done. Gaskets came in today. Thanks Len and Chris at Baranco Acura Parts for fast shipping again.

I will post pictures tomorrow when the paint dries for the thermostat housing.

What I learned today about a poormans R conversion.

The water pipe on a GSR block has one extra "water hose" than a B16. The heater core return line on a gsr goes to the water pipe instead of the thermostat housing.
So since I still have a B16 block in my car that I can't GIVE away around here I decided to use the water pipe from the water pump to the thermo housing.
Well what I also learned by doing that is the tabs are different between acura and honda. So I had to swap the thermo housing as well. This will mate right up to the ITR head/IM I have and be nicer in the long run.

Now the GSR thermo housing has the water hose thing that bends up towards the intake manifold which is nicer but I had to sacrifice for a clean look and not just tap off one fitting. One of those things.

I am going for an oem parts build that looks just as clean as stock in case anyone cares.
The only think not oem parts will be cams and valvetrain.

Will talk to combustion chamber tomorrow to work out details on my head. I have decided to go with him after all even though I know there are alot of nice headworkers around. Sorry guys.

Getting excited as I am almost done and I found 350.00 in my gun safe that I forgot about when I was debating getting an H22 longblock so my headwork just got sealed.

Default Got my head back from combustion contraption

Ok haven't done much to my engine lately. Started a job with Halliburton so been in the classroom last 3 weeks.

I got my head back from combustion contraption and I must say it looks pretty damn sexy. Can't wait to get her going.
I did manage to take apart my ITR manifold and clean that and replace o-rings and gaskets throughout.
Cleaned up my JG throttle body and install my injectors after getting them back from SJersey at KGparts.com. They do great work and are highly recommended as well.

Won't have pictures until I get my valvetrain assembled and manifold/head mocked up on my block. Won't get assemble until I get a degree set and cams so I can take some measurements before bolting to the block.

More to come.............................

Bro that **** is money. Your car is going to be fast as a motherf'er. Seriously your build looks great so far. I know that bitch is fast as hell. I hope to go LS/V sometime soon with my car. My buddy also has a 91 Prelude with a B20 in it that I might be trying soon on a YS1 for now. But either way, the LSV sounds like it might be ****. **** think about it, they're not really all that great for reliability unless it's done perfectly but **** who's complaining with 170-190 horsepower? Good luck with the H22 hybrid brother.

thanks. I am actually in the works for trading this motor, my accord wagon and my db8 teggy for a 96 accord wagon, a 96 prelude si, a 91 crx and a grip of motors.

But with a street tune with crome pro this thing does rip on the streets. I sourced out my G23 swap pretty cheap so right now with what is in the picture I have about 400.00 tied up into it. should be a G23 longblock ready for a tranny for under 1000.00 easy.

200 hp and 160+ ft. tq. here I come. I might even keep the crx and put the next motor in it.

I hate ******* decisions.

Took this to the 1/4 last night.

3600 feet above sea level. B16 cams. Best I could squeeze was a 2.46 60' and a 15.14 time.

That is with B16 cams and 205/50/15 kumho street tires. I am trading the motor so I won't be able to find out what some better cams and a better header could have pulled off.

I would say low 14's maybe high 13's would be easy with some cams, header and time on the dyno. A traction bar and some DOT drags would have helped also. But I did keep up with the mustang gt's there.

I will have my H2B up in running in either my hatch or a crx by the beginning of next years season.
