Default The Dr. Is In! D16 on Crack Build Thread

Ok, after much consideration I decided to stop hiding in the shower and join my fellow attention whores (Tippy, Street ) in having my build thread. While many threads in this particular forum show you some type of ridiculous K-Swap, or the boosted B-Series from hell, I propose something different. I aim to prove that a motor can be BUILT from the ground up that is damn near bullet proof, make great power, and come out to LESS than the cost of a comparable engine purchased from a reputable engine Importer (Hmotors): I present you the D16 on Crack!

The Theory
I've always been a great believer in take what you have and make the most of it (unless it's a Daewoo, then crush it). I avoided all my friends who told me to just swap a B-Series and be done with it. After years of deliberation, the SOHC seems the best choice. Why? I've worked on them for the last 4 years continuously, the OEM market for them is huge from so many people tossing them aside, and pre-existing constraints. I would like to try to keep additional costs by using what I have already - no need for any more mounts, no need for dealing with axles or shift linkages, clutch connections, anything.

The Addiction
INGREDIENTS

1) 1x D16Z6 Golden Eagle Sleeved Block
Currently the block stands @ 77mm bore, so with a stock stroke this leaves me with 1690cc's of use-able displacement.....size matters I'll be taking it out to 78 and reclaiming an extra 30cc's to bring it up to 1720.

2) 1x Donor Crankshaft from a D16A6
I just pulled this from a donor motor I have laying my dorm room last night, inspected all the bearing surfaces and nay a scratch As you can see, nice and packaged until it's trip to the I.C. Lab.

3) 1x Donor Mains from said D16A6
My block did not come with mains from the seller, when he moved he lost the box they were in. Now I've been advised by some to just get rid of the block I have and start fresh, that mains should never be mixed, well sucks to be me. I refuse to throw out a sleeved block for no good reason, or to sell it and make it someone elses problem. As long as a damn good machine shop does the align bore on the mains, I will be fine. My only concern will be deck height of the pistons from the marginal northern move and the connection with the oil pump. All problems to be solved in time, but this isn't a B-Series. The operable rev-line will be set for 8,000, no higher.

*APPENDUM
When I say from from the Donor D16A6, I mean donor. I may not be the first person to take undertake a motor dismantling in their dorm room, but I may be the first to do it completely in a Grey tub. I should have took pictures along the way during the dismantling, but....I was having too much fun.

1990 Civic Sedan

First person to tell me to lower it gets a boot in the face, it's on Koni Yellows in the picture and an Eibach Pro-Kit. While I'm on that tangent, let me be the first to say that I also believe in find a need, fill a need. In other terms, don't swap a motor into your car and then prep the car for the motor. This isn't just for my anal nature, this is a safety issue. All USDM car's were designed MAXIMUM for the nature of the D16A6, this includes all the suspension bits and the brake parts. I know the stock parts work fine, but they could work better! Efficiency FTW

Least I can do, with your constant Supercharger SOHC > Veyron talk in the past made sure I stayed true to the SOHC cause. And because I know you're a traitor now with that damn B -->

I'm hoping to make 180+ Crank HP keeping the compression ratio within 0.5 of stock. Ladyman on his Endyn build pulled 179~180, and a boat load of torque. I'll be able to give a good prediction though when I manage to find a spare D16Z6 head to flow and get some data off.

You would be surprised how hard it is to find a D-Series short block for a reasonable price that hasn't spun any bearings in it's life. Now then you have to narrow that term to just 1.6L, and then narrow it down to the D16A6 / D16Z6 blocks, you spend a lot of time scratching your head. I've had the sleeved block since, November I believe, took till now to find a good donor source.

Currently the project is aiming just to get this motor running as a stand alone motor, so initially you can say N/A. But once all is said and done, and I get bored with the power levels (which will happen), it'll be time for the GT28 that's on my wish list.

Imagine this, two hands holding the block, one foot stepping on the pry bar wedged between the pan and the block, and me praying that I didn't fall over and have a roommate have to save me
