call me dumb..but it was hard for me to find a nice spot to measure...I did read to put the feeler under the arm and on top of the valve assmebly..that when im like wtf??

here i can see the screw threads on which the arm adjusts on..soooo where am i suppose to put the filler..I loosened one and turned the screw but not a spot to check for measurement.
Is my **** that bad that its set too high.

all are like this of course

thanks ahead of time

you just stick the feeler gauge in there (where the red arrow is)

oh snap...now that you pointed that out...and if correct..that ish looks bad lol

Edit:..I dont see how turning the screw makes this gap change..besides make the arm change height..?

there's a gap there when the arm is not being pushed by the cam lobe... so when you turn the screw you can change the gap between the screw and the valve... the screw is on the rocker arm.. so when the rocker arm moves down the screw pushes the valve in then when the cam lob is gone the spring returns the valve to its initial position

if the gap is too large, the rocker screw will hit the valve with larger force, thus the TICKING you hear... with smaller gap, the rocker hasn't got much inertia so it just scraps the valve and there's hardly any noise (unless you listen with a microphone) and it's much smoother (as if the screw was connected straight to the valve)

the arm/rocker doesn't change height when you change the screw... the valve movement is affected by that screw.... if it's too loose, the valve will open less... if it's too tight, the valve will open more...

didn't mean to rant sorry

so i need not worry about the fact that the arm moves along the screw..all i have to check is this gap Under this screw. when i turn the adj screw (making the arm go up and down) hence changing the gap...
good ish

Default Great write up!!

Great write up. I came to this site just for this. Couple of questions:

How often do you need to do this procedure?

My valves have gotten to where they make alot of noise, especially under a load like going up a hill or something like that, will this help this problem?

What kind of valve cover gaskets are on Honda's? Are they cork or rubber?

BTW, I've got a 97 Civic with almost 160K on it. Been a great car for a daily driver.

yeh d series got it a LOT easier

Whenever I do this, I also use small, long wooden dowell through the spark plug hole to check for TDC. I turn the crank very slowly, and feel the dowell to see when its at the topmost of its stroke.

together with the other forms of determining TDC, I find this very effective

Dowell idea makes sense. I'll probably use that method.

i think i always did it the hard way...started with #1 on tdc...adjusted them and turned the crank until the intake valves on the next firing cylinder are up with the lobe down and done it like that...then repeated it when the exhaust

Top Dead Center. You can either look at the cam gears or you can look at the marks on the crank pulley and line them up with the pointer.

Maybe if you spent more time helping people on other threads rather than criticizing and making useless statements you might learn something.
