Re: 3" exhaust...too big for n/a? (specie)
I have 3" exhaust on my 92 civic HB with a b18b. Not much done other than lighten flywheel, exedy clutch, and cai. My car crackels a little bit but it sounds really nice. it is hella loud in my car but i deal with it. I am planning on doing a LS/Vtec build this summer with a stage 2 cam. And right now i am in the market for a DC header. <-- that probly make my exhaust louder, but owell. soon i hope to get'er dynoed. Ill post it up when i do.

it all depends on how much work u have done to the motor. if minor i wouldnt. but if u got cams then why not. if just want noise then hell yea go for it.

Re: 3" exhaust...too big for n/a? (highrevnef)
Update:
I tuned with the 3" exhaust. I made good power however I know my midrange was suffering and the car wasn't loud....it was ******* RETARDED LOUD!(hollowed cat, no resonator, 3" straight through muffy) It was to the point where, I would get home and my ears were buzzing and ****(felt like I'd been partying at a club all night ). Anyhow, I recently swapped the exhaust for 2 1/2" cat back setup. I still retained a 3" outlet on my header, ran a 3" high flow cat, then tappered down. The car feels a lot better. Tq is definately beneifiting from the smaller diameter piping. I will have numbers up soon.
I think the general consensus is, 3" is a little on the big side for 81-82mm(stock sleeve) setup. Peak power will be greater however its all about the power under the curve.

i wouldnt be to concerned about the torque i doubt that you'll lose any of it with a 3" exhaust if any thing it should help produce more horses

LoL... "you need back pressure" - that's a good one.
Anyway, looks like you alleviated the situation. I was going to say that 3" might be a little too big and you'll have to be revving pretty high for it to be worthwhile, but you already somewhat fixed the problem. I think someone might've explained it already, but the reason you don't want too big of a pipe is because it will slow down exhaust flow. The idea is to have the highest "mass flow rate" possible, and it turns out 2.5" works pretty well for NA cars.
