temperature gauge not working after overheating...
Lost coolant the other day and forgot to top off.
SO..... my car overheated tonight. I let it cool and topped it off. It seems to be running just fine now but the temp gauge doesnt move from cool. It doesnt even go up to normal temp. Is there a possibilty I killed a sensor?
Thanks for any help for the dummie.....

did you bleed the system? if there is air trapped in there, it will mess the gauge reading up...

or your coolant temp sensor and your thermostat. had that problem twice, once was the sensor the other was the thermostat.
it's two cheap and easy to fix things too.

thermostat is only a few months old....
where is the sensor located?
..and is it called the thermosensor?

Hey how did you end up fixing the problem because recently a heater hose busted and coolant leaked out and almost overheated. after replacing the radiator hose and topping the radiator off the temp gauge stopped working. thanks

I would replace it before you bother doing any other tests.
they're dirt cheap.
replace it and bleed the system and if you still don't get a temp reading then start looking into checking the sensor wires for continuity.
It's highly unlikely that overheating destroyed the sensor. They're made to work at high temps so that you know when it's overheating..
