OBD2 scanner cannot communicate with my car. Please Help!
Hi I did a bit of searching and still haven't been able to resolve my issue. I am unable to get my car to communicate with any scanners. I have tried three and all three did not connect. I don't have any check engine lights, but finally got a note for emissions, so in order to pass I will have to get this resolved So any help would be greatly appreciated!

37820-P73-013, will the car only communicate with a USDM ecu?
I've checked the fuse panels under the dash and hood, and they all seem to check out. My only other idea would be to test the obd2 scan port to see if it is getting voltage, does anybody have a diagram of which pins i should test? Thanks in advance!

well its got a JDM front so wiring could be a major concern, I'm just hoping that isn't the case, and if by chance anybody would have any experience with this issue . .

Thanks for the help, I was worried that was the case, but glad its not a wiring issue as of yet then. Now here's to hoping I can find one at a reasonable price ...

pretty much the jdm ecus run a obd1 interface but has the ecu plugs like the us obd2s, just pop in a us obd2 ecu and you can scan away

that makes sense, well at least my fuses are in check then. Any idea on what I'm looking to pay for a USDM ecu? Should it be about the same as a JDM one? I'm hoping i could trade the 003 I have, if at all possible?

what year is your car? like the frame? p73-a02 and a03 are expensive. i sold one of each a year or two ago for $150 and now they are fetching that to $250 pretty easy. a02 is the 97 ecu and a03 is the 98. if you run a a03 in a 96-97 car you'll get a gas tank code

well its a 98 so I would be looking for the a03, which I am not too sure if I will be able to find in time or at price. .
Do you think it would be possible to use a GSR ecu for a 98 in order to pass emissions, or will that cause more trouble then it would help?
thanks again for all the help!

it would be some trouble because the gsr ecu would look for the iab and some other stuff the type R doesnt have hence throwing a code. maybe look for somebody that would loan it out for you if you get them a deposit and return it when you are done.

the iab's won't throw a code, think of the skunk manifold on the gsr. the evap however will. do you still have the factory evap system in place? the gsr ecu would work if you switched it in the parking lot, passed emissions then went back to the itr ecu....might work anyway no idea what tailpipe emissions would do if they both scan and test. i know a lot of states just use the scan tool and send you on the way if there are no codes

well its a USDM R and has a diagnostic port, I touched base with the guy off CL he wants to do 250 shipped through ebay. I'll probably end up going with that, just so i can get emissions taken care of and done with. Thanks for all the help, very appreciated!!

still not a bad deal shipped and verified with ebay and paypal, the most you would save if you waited around is probably $75, totally not worth waiting a year plus for a few bucks. the other thing is if this is a03 that's the exact ecu you need for your car. not a year off, not close but exact
you did switch the oil pumps and hook up your cfs sensor when you did the engine swap right? if you didn't you'll have a code for the cfs

Re: OBD2 scanner cannot communicate with my car. Please Help!
Just a suggestion, if you're only using this ECU for emissions and to not drive the car very much why not just pick up an LS non vtec ecu? I would assume that they are going to be much cheaper than a "Type R" ecu. Also I'm pretty sure you wont have any codes regardless because the ls ecu has less sensors than the ITR one. I know this worked fine for my OBD1 B16 swap when I was diagnosing some ecu problems. I drove around on an LS computer for 2 days with no codes. Obviously vtec and such wont work but it's not like it matters from an emissions stand point.

Hello,
I have failed emissions on my 99 Integra Type R as well, would you mind sharing what the issue actually was that you found out thanks to the scanner?
Thanks a lot.
