axle problem?
started while driving to work on monday. sitting at a light and it turns green an i get vibration from the drivers side like there were indentions in the road. didn't think nothing of it. i drive about another 10 miles and at another light. light turns green and the vibration is more noticeable and pulls a little to the left. don't think anything of it b/c i still think it's the road. i hear a metal noise and dismiss that as the car going past. few miles later at another light. well i take off from the light and vibration has grown increasingly noticeable and the metal noise is very audible. i'm thinking my wheel is going to fall off or something. i get to work and jack up the car. i spin the wheel w/ no sound coming from it and no play from the wheel bearing. later that when when my wife comes to pick me up she drives it around the parking deck and no sound at all coming from it. could it very well be my axle? the inner boot has been torn for over a year now. i'm getting new axles either way, but i want to know if the problem could be related to something else.

Re: axle problem?
before there was a lot of vibration from a stop, but none of that, no pulling to the left or metal noise...checked the bearings and it's solid with no play...but i'm going to go over the car again in the am

Re: axle problem?
no, i got rebuild one, you know the way the shop do, they will order you new one (used but rebuild) then when they got it they took my messd up one out and replace with the rebuild one. then my car still got the vibration. took it back he take a look at the axel and told me that he gonna change to other one, got new one no more problem.......i mean all of the axel are all re build unless you want to buy like a new new one which it will coast you more!

Get the tranny inspected. I'll bet the crappy old driveaxles you had wore down the splines in the tranny. Weird thought, but I've heard of crazier. Might wanna just consider a whole tranny swap 2. if the clutch is still good, you can go to a ricer shop and pick up an si tranny for less than 300 and it'll be under warranty... Then check your new driveaxles while you have them pulled, and make sure the splines aren't messed up..
P.S. Don't forget that some tranny's are hydraulic, and others are cable... I almost had that happen to me, but i caught it before purchase.

Re: axle problem?
When I noticed that same noise on my 90 Hatch it turned out to be that the axel itself was slightly bent. Which caused the vibration.

Re: axle problem?
well changed the drivers side and the vibration was still there and started on the passenger side, but found a problem...can't get the axle out of the spindle. looks like the threads may have crossed...i've been hammering and using a pry bar since yesterday

DO IT ON ALL FOURS
Re: axle problem?
Sounds like the axle was not compressing the wheel bearing all the way because of the cross threaded nut not allowing full torque which in turn led to bearing failure.

Re: axle problem?
there is something very wrong with your lights.check it as soon as possible otherwise you will have to face much more problem than you have expected to have.
