Default Re: I HAVE A CONCERN ABOUT A POTENTIAL AXLE ISSUE, GOOD GENTLEMEN. PLEASE ADVISE WITHIN.

It's veeeeeery likely an axle. They're about $70 and can be installed yourself.

Get under the car with a flash light, and see if the black boot on your axle is torn. Be sure to check both, of course. If so, the grease packed within slung out, dirt got in, and the elusive 'wheel/hub bearing' is toast. Easier to replace axle than replace bearing in most peoples' experience (mine included).

Also, topic title.

Yes. I in fact have the same problem in my '96 Civic EX auto, I have a torn boot I'm meaning to replace (driver side, already did passenger a few months back). When backing up, I'll tap the brakes and hear a CLAK noise. Confused me, made me think it's the brakes.

Anyway, it's very advisable to fix it as soon as possible. It'll get progressively worse, of course. Shops around here charge $150 to pull and replace an axle, but local auto parts stores sell remanufactured axles pretty cheaply. I hear bad of AutoZone, good on Advance Auto Parts. Just be sure you have a warranty and keep the receipt for a bit.

Yep. I mean, if it were seen earlier you could just replace boot and re-pack grease, but at this point we're both screwed. But eh, not too horrid of a job luckily. Ever pulled an axle out?

Agreed. I'm about to have to pull axles to not only replace 1, but to do a transmission swap as well (going 5-speed in the next 2 weeks). I'mma start searching.

Mmhmm. Also, when you do pull the axle, it'd probably be best to completely remove it, take it to the auto parts store (most charge core, some don't), and get the new one. This, of course, requires that you have another transport (family?), but will save you from having to have an extra unknown amount of money as 'core deposit'. Also saves a trip back.

Thus far I've found nothing on axle replacement howto, but will link when I do.

I have that tapping or clanking sound when I reverse and release the brake. I never thought it could be the axle, even though mine are bad. It really doesnt sound like that.

Maybe we have separate issues - Mine occurs when I apply the brake.
Could just be a brake problem instead of axle problem. But, regardless, we need axles anyway. =]

The clicking sound you hear when you turn is your axles, but the sound you hear when you put your car into gear is possibly a motor mount that is no good, because when you put automatics in gear the motor shifts a little, so if you have a bad motor mount, when its shifts it will make a noise, so you might what to check your motor mount for wear and tear.

Well just for info I narrowed my brake noise down. I have a squeak when I release the brake anytime. Its coming from the drums. But I have a tap that kind of resonates and sounds like the dust shield in front. Also I can wiggle my front calipers when everythings assembled is that normal?

I do, in fact, have some messed up rubber on my timing belt side mount. I'll be sure to replace that.
