you won't be able to test it with a multimeter, they don't refresh fast enough. If you have a fluke meter with the bar graph, you can count the cycle rate, but it's still tricky. Check the heater...

right on the alternator. There is the three pin connector and then there is the threaded post with the terminal held on with a nut. This is the output terminal.
